Course Overview
Kendal College is located on the boundary of the Lake District National Park, the course makes the most of the easy access to numerous world class venues for the delivery of practical days.
The course is based at the Milnthorpe Road Campus and we have a Lakeshore classroom based at Fell Foot, with stunning views of Lake Windermere that we use for teaching some of the units on the course.
Our outdoor tutors, Paul and Josh are some of the most experienced in the area with over 40 years of instructional experience between them spanning over every sector of the industry. Between them they hold a high number of higher-level outdoor qualifications, there is one thing for sure there will be no shortage of adventure on the course!
The HNC/D in Sport - Outdoor Adventure is the perfect course for setting you on a career path in the outdoors or for refining your skills and knowledge so you are better equipped for a more senior role or position in the industry. The units have been carefully selected by Paul and Josh based on what they know makes a well-rounded and skilled practitioner from their experience of working in college's, schools, residential centres, care, family, corporate, private, youth and skill development throughout their careers.
This qualification is awarded by Edexcel/Pearson. The HNC can be completed in one year full-time or two years part-time.

Students will be given a broad range of learning opportunities on the course:
- Mentorship programme with hand-picked industry experts
- Practical outdoor adventure days, developing skills in preparation for NGB training and assessment courses
- Work-based adventure learning at a range of local and regional locations
- Outdoor adventure expeditions UK and abroad
- Work experience from a choice of industry leading providers
- NGB training and assessment courses (there may be funds up to GBP1000 per learner towards these courses)
- Lectures and seminars
- Visits to relevant companies with your tutor and other learners
- Visiting speakers
Entry Requirements
64 UCAS points that typically are gained from:
- Level 3 Extended Diploma (e.g. UAL or BTEC) (MPP)
- AS/A Levels
In addition, GCSE grade C or above in both Math and English or equivalent is required.
Applicants should have a passion for outdoor activities and demonstrate a broad range of personal experience in outdoor environments.
Applications from mature students are also welcomed who have the appropriate work experience and/or employer references.
All applicants who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English must have an IELTS score of level 5.5 or above with a minimum of 5.0 for individual sections.
After Your Course
After this course, you could progress to the HND.
The HND can be studied in one year full-time, or two years part-time.
It is also possible to study full-time and switch to part-time and vice versa, and make the full HNC/HND 3 years.
The qualification prepares learners for employment in the sector and will be suitable for learners who have already decided that they wish to enter this area of work. Some adult learners may wish to make the commitment required by this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or progress into higher education.

Degree-level student finance
Whether you qualify for student finance depends on specific criteria. The main student finance package for full-time students includes a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for living costs. Part-time students can access a tuition fee loan to pay for their courses. Generally, you will only get student finance if you’re doing your first degree-level qualification. It is possible to pay in full or via instalments.
The Access to Learning Fund is a non-repayable discretionary fund that gives students facing hardship extra financial support to access and remain in higher education. This can be accessed via the college. Please speak to Student Services for more information.
