Course Overview

Recognised as a language in its own right in 2003 and legally as an official language of Britain in 2022, thankfully more and more people are becoming aware of this beautiful language and diverse culture. For too long, Native BSL users have experienced communication barriers on a daily basis. Taking the time to learn some fundamentals can go a long way to supporting an inclusive society.

This Level 1 course will introduce you to basic conversational content. It is suitable for those considering higher level BSL qualifications in the future. It is also beneficial to those that simply wish to learn another language, are studying for personal development or have friends and family that are BSL users.

While written and online resources are invaluable, the nature of this three-dimensional language lends itself to in-person tutorials. The classes at college will be a very interactive experience.

The qualification is split into three units: Introduction to BSL; Conversational BSL and Communication in BSL about everyday life. The first unit is assessed internally, the second two are assessed externally. Upon completion, you will receive a Level 1 qualification and certificate.

Please note, this course has a video assessment process that requires candidates to be filmed.
