Course Overview
Professional engineers are at the forefront of developing new ideas in an ever changing world and are highly valued within industry. They form the backbone of research and development in their respective fields, as well as being inspiring leaders of teams and projects.
Level 4 Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificates provide a globally recognised qualification, offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment, as well as opportunities for students to progress into Higher Education.
The course runs for two years, with each academic year lasting 33 weeks. All teaching and delivery is based at Kendal College, one day per week.
The first year contains 4 common units, to allow learners to switch to Electrical Engineering in the second year, if required:
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Mathematics
- Quality Process Improvements
- Production Engineering for Manufacturing
The second year contains 1 common unit, and 3 units specific to Manufacturing Engineering:
- Managing a Professional Engineering Project
- Computer Aided Design and Manufacture
- Industry 4.0
- Industrial Robotics
You will develop the mathematical principals and theoretical knowledge to progress in the sector and have access to specialist software to enable you to design and build. You will be based in our new Engineering & Construction Centre, utilising our CAD suite & mechanical workshops.
All units are assessed through assignments or practical investigations; there are no formal examinations. As assessed all work is submitted digitally, you should ensure you have an appropriate level of computing skills before commencing this course.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded with a Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Manufacturing pathway).
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be 18 years of age or over and should have the following qualifications as a minimum:
- Level 3 qualification in a related Engineering subject (NVQ, BTEC) or
- A-Levels in relevant subjects, e.g., Maths, Physics, Chemistry
Applications with no formal qualifications but with a wide engineering background may be considered, as will applicants who have different qualifications to those listed above. All applicants will have an interview with a college tutor, to ensure the course suits their needs.

After Your Course
Learners who achieve a HNC qualification typically move into supervisory and management roles within a company, or progress onto degree programmes at university.

The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2024/25 academic year.
Level 3-6 Courses
Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19 or over and studying eligible level 3, 4, 5 & 6 courses. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.
It is also possible to pay in full or via instalments.
Performing Arts, Level 4 - This course is free if you are aged 18 on 31/08/2024.
