Course Overview
Learners will acquire and use skills of communication, risk management, assessment and planning of care and promoting resilience as they complete the qualification through work-based learning opportunities.
Other topics covered include:
- Understanding the development of children and young people in residential childcare
- How to support positive outcomes for children and young people
- How to support children and young people who have experienced harm or abuse.
Upon achievement of this qualification, the learner will be equipped as an Residential Childcare Practitioner.
The qualification is aimed at learners who are employed in suitable roles within homes, schools or colleges. Learner knowledge and understanding that comes from working in these environments is a requirement for this qualification.
All topics will be internally assessed using a range of methods including direct observation within the workplace, written assignments and professional discussion.
This is a work-based qualification. Learners must be employed in a home, school or college setting at Level 3 to complete this qualification.
Entry Requirements
Learners must be at least 18 years old and employed in a suitable role within a home, school or college. Previous Level 3 study is a clear advantage but wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding working in homes, schools or colleges is a requirement for this CPD qualification. Entry is at the discretion of the college. Kendal College will ensure that this course is appropriate for the age and ability of the learner. This may involve an assessment to ensure learners can meet the criteria and comply with the relevant literacy, numeracy, and health and safety aspects of this course.
After Your Course
This qualification provides the suitable level of occupational competence to meet minimum regulatory and registration requirements for the sector.
Achievement of this pathway will enable learners to access higher level jobs within the sector, e.g. senior residential childcare worker, advanced practitioner in residential childcare, senior support worker in residential childcare.
There is also opportunity for learners to go on to further study at higher levels, particularly working towards:
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare
- Foundation Degree in Health & Social Care or Therapeutic Care

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are per year for full-time courses and per course for part-time courses.

The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2024/25 academic year.
Level 3-6 Courses
Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19 or over and studying eligible level 3, 4, 5 & 6 courses. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.
You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a Level 3 qualification if you do not already have a Level 3 qualification (this will depend on the course & your age on 31/08/24).

A-Levels
The fees displayed are for the one-year AS-Level course. If you would like to progress onto the full A-Level, please get in touch with us for the cost of the second year, as it will be different.
16-18 year olds
There are no course fees if you were aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another institution.
