Course Overview

This course is ideal for beginners with an interest in ceramics who wish to gain a formal qualification and participate in an enjoyable, practical ceramic course. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in throwing, slab building, coiling, surface relief for ceramics including under glazing and glazing. You will be given the opportunity, towards the end of course, to develop a final piece using a given project brief. This will involve research, experimentation, revisiting techniques from earlier in the course, producing a final piece and evaluating ceramic work. You will learn how to follow a project brief so, on completion of the course, you will have bank of knowledge and skills to be able to continue your ceramic practice either through personal study or through further formal qualifications.

Learning Styles:
The course will be taught through demonstrations, group discussions and hands on practical tasks. This course will involve some personal study outside the class, including research.

The course will include time spent on tutor led workshops, these will include:
- Throwing on the wheel
- Slab building
- Coiling
- Modelling
- Design development
- Surface relief
- Under glazing and glazing
- Health & Safety

You will be working towards an NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft.

You will be assessed via a portfolio of work produced throughout the course, including mood-boards, design sketches, ceramic samples, and sketchbook evidence of the creation of your final ceramic item.

There is no formal examination element to this course.

There is an additional fee of GBP25, which covers the use of resources and materials. If you are gaining a fee waiver for the course, the course fee will be waived but this workshop fee is still required.

Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2 Courses

You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:

  • Receive an eligible means-tested benefit, e.g. JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Have an annual salary of less than £25,000
  • Are aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another school/college
  • Do not already have a level 1, 2 or 3 qualification
  • Have a household income under £35,000 and are in financial hardship
