Emilie studied the Extended Diploma Art and Design and then progressed to the Foundation Studies Art and Design here with us at Kendal College.

After completing her studies, Emilie successfully gained a place at the prestigious Royal School of Needlework located at London’s Hampton Court. She started her degree and within the first 2 months was selected by the Alexander McQueen Fashion House to work in a small team sewing and beading the £2.6 million wedding dress for a well-known sports star!

Emily Mason update 2025

I am so glad I chose to study the Level 3 course (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) instead of A-Levels. I had no idea in Year 11 that my specialism would become textiles. Being able to use the fantastic textile resources at college, enabled me to specialise and get an incredible university place.

Why did you choose to study at Kendal College?

I chose to study Art & Design Level 3 (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) after school. My school didn’t have any textile facilities, so it was only when I came to College that I discovered I loved it – you don’t know what you want to do until you try it.

How would you describe your college experience?

You don’t feel belittled here -here students and tutors are on the same level. I felt that college was a supportive environment and competitive in a positive and exciting way, so you want to do your best. It’s exciting to come into College- I’d never felt that in education before. We are with nice people doing nice things – why wouldn’t you want to be here? I remember that one of our tutors had a big exhibition at the Brewery Arts Centre. It was great going to an exhibition where the artist is your teacher!

The jobs board was very useful and we were encouraged to apply for various competitions throughout the year e.g. Cumbria Artist of the Year. We visited art galleries and went on a 3-day trip to London. That was so fun and non-stop! The tutors put their trust in us and we had our own time to travel on the tube and explore the city. Not everyone gets the chance to go to London so it was a great experience!

How would you describe the student-tutor relationship in college?

The tutors support you to look at all the options, and help you with university applications and CVs for jobs. They work around what the students want to do and inspired me to try my best. I know people who did A-Levels and didn’t get into university, and they probably would have done if they’d come here!

What skills did you learn during your time at college?

I developed my skills of teamwork and general communication- which is important in this industry. You have to be dedicated, as there are always people who need you!

What are you up to now?

I was lucky enough to study at Royal School of Needlework located at London’s Hampton Court. When I got accepted I felt so lucky, as it’s an amazing place. My grandad was so excited to visit me and see the palace gardens!

I am now a professional hand embroiderer fascinated by the alternate and ornate. I have a passion for the hand-made, whether it is within fashion, accessories, interior, costume or art, my intrigue encourages me to explore and combine these sectors. I studied at the Royal School of Needlework after college. My professional training along with varied industry experience has equipped me with a thorough knowledge of the production of hand embroidery within fashion, interiors, costume and textile art.
