Emilie Mason studied the Extended Diploma Art and Design and then progressed to the Foundation Studies Art and Design here with us at Kendal College.
After completing her courses Emilie successfully gained a place at the prestigious Royal School of Needlework located at London’s Hampton Court. She started her degree in September and within the first 2 months was selected by the Alexander McQueen Fashion House to work in a small team sewing and beading the £2.6 million wedding dress for a well-known sports star!
Why did you choose this course?
I did Art & Design Level 3 (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) after school. The school didn’t have any textile facilities at school so it was only when I came to College that I discovered I loved it – you don’t know what you want to do until you try it.
Is College like you had expected? If not, why?
You don’t feel belittled here as you can at school, where the teachers seem above you. Here students and tutors are at the same level.
One of our tutors recently had a big exhibition at the Brewery Arts Centre. It was great going to an exhibition where the artist is your teacher.
How are you assessed?
Emilie’s Final Major Project, exhibited at the Open Studio Exhibition:
How would you describe your college experience?
It’s exciting to come into College, I’ve never had that before. We are with nice people doing nice things – why wouldn’t you want to be here!
What are you doing after College?
I'm going to the Royal School of Needlework. The tutors support you to look at all the options, and help you with university applications and CVs for jobs. They work around what the students want to do.
I know people who did A-Levels and didn’t get into university, and they probably would have done if they’d come here.
