Course Overview

This course is designed for people who wish to teach in the post compulsory sector, which means teaching people who are 14 years and above.

You will usually bring a subject specialism based on your own experience prior to starting on the course and use the techniques you learn to create an exciting experience for learners. This would include how to plan and deliver inspiring lessons, how people learn and group dynamics. The emphasis is very much in giving you the skills that will help you become an inspirational teacher, lecturer or trainer.

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training will provide teachers in the Education and Training sector with occupational competence. It is a 30-credit qualification.

There is a requirement for 30 hours of teaching practice. This can be paid or voluntary but must be in place by the start of the course. The College cannot guarantee teaching practice and it is up to the candidate to arrange this, although support will be given to establish contacts in the relevant departments.

The programme introduces the basic concepts of structuring lessons, planning and delivering lessons and legal standards for teachers. The course aims to model teaching and learning strategies in its delivery as well as covering the knowledge base required for work in the sector. The teaching practice element (minimum 30 hours) means that this theory can be applied in practice and then reflected upon.

Assessment for this programme includes academic writing at level 4, the compilation of a portfolio, presentations and three successful observations of teaching practice of at least one hour each.

Entry Requirements

To join the programme you will need at least a Level 3 qualification. You will also need a GCSE Grade C in English or equivalent, or to successfully complete a diagnostic assessment prior to entry and complete a successful interview. You are also required to complete a teaching placement, which will need to be identified before enrolment.
