After completing our Access to Health & Human Sciences course, Michael Pascoe is studying BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling & Psychotherapy at the University of Cumbria!
On the Access course, you'll broaden your perspective and get a better feel of what you as an individual want to do. We were always learning something new and interesting.
What did you enjoy about studying an Access course at Kendal College?
My experience of Kendal College was a positive one where the subjects were very varied, and we were always learning something new and interesting. My best memories are of the friends I made at the college and the laughter that I shared with them. I developed research skills and always with the knowledge to dig deeper, but also how to separate good research from bad research and to not be afraid to get things wrong. The course helped me to plan my future and made a real difference to me. I was originally looking at mental health, but when we started studying psychology, I leaned more towards that. I remember, the University of Cumbria had just started a psychology with psychotherapy and counselling degree, so the research skills come in very handy! Some of my fellow classmates have gone to be midwives and nurses, and some have gone into mental health. It can lead to a variety of courses. On the Access course, you'll broaden your perspective and get a better feel of what you as an individual want to do.
What are you doing now?
I am currently in my final year of university doing my BSC in psychology with psychotherapy and counselling. I am currently doing my placement for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation service and have 30 hours left to complete my placement. I'm in my dissertation year, so I am busy with lots of things.
What advice would you give to potential students who are thinking of studying at Kendal College?
My advice to students would be to approach everything with an open mind, be curious and don't be afraid to ask for help. I would say learning to network is a key component to being a success and being able to work together is a vital skill. Enjoy your time at college and you will bond as a group and make lifelong friends. Most importantly, just go for it and you are sure to enjoy it!
