Level 2 Auto-care Technician
An auto-care technician requires a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills. This apprenticeship is typically well-suited for individuals who are new to the automotive industry. They carry out inspections of cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles including electric or hydrogen powered vehicles for basic routine maintenance. They carry out a range of services and repairs. Autocare technicians inspect, remove, and replace components on various vehicle systems. They are responsible for contributing to the maintenance of stock levels and replenishment activities when stock deliveries are received. They use a range of specialist tools, measuring instruments and diagnostic equipment.
Duration: Approximately 27 months (24 months training + 3-month assessment window [EPA])
Level 3 Motor Vehicle & Maintenance
Apprentices should develop a wide range of technical and professional skills, including diagnosing and repairing faults across all vehicle systems, using advanced diagnostic equipment, and performing routine servicing and maintenance. They should also gain experience in customer service, parts ordering, and working collaboratively with other departments. In smaller garages, apprentices may take on broader responsibilities such as managing parts deliveries and liaising directly with customers. Understanding commercial operations, environmental practices like recycling and waste disposal, and adapting to emerging technologies—such as electric and zero-emission vehicles—are also essential. As vehicles become more complex, apprentices must be trained to think critically, work efficiently, and deliver high-quality service in a fast-paced, evolving industry.
Duration: Approximately 42 months (36 months training + 6-month assessment window [EPA])
