Level 2 General Farm Worker

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for all aspects of general farm work including feeding, watering, maintaining housing, boundaries, and harvest work. Office work is minimal although basic daily record keeping will be required. Typical working hours will depend on farm type and labour structure. A general farm worker apprentice will be expected to do long hours, only as permitted within UK employment law.

Additional qualifications: Apprentices will completeThe safe use of pesticides (PA1)” and “Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work” during their apprenticeship.

Duration: Approximately 15 months (12 months training + 3-month assessment window [EPA])

Level 3 Livestock Unit Technician

A Livestock Unit Technician is responsible for managing daily livestock operations on a farm, focusing on animal health, welfare, and productivity. They typically work with one species and handle tasks from birth to sale including breeding plans, health plans, key performance indicator and health and wellness of livestock. The role involves using and maintaining farm equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and biosecurity standards, and meeting business performance targets. They may supervise junior staff and contribute to strategic decisions. Work hours vary by farm type, often requiring long shifts within legal limits.

Level 4 Assistant Farm Manager

An Assistant Farm Manager plays a key role in supporting the professional operation and management of an agricultural or horticultural business. They are involved in all stages of production—from initial inputs (like seed or breeding stock) through to harvest or sale—ensuring high standards of productivity, sustainability, and compliance.

They should play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of a farm. Their responsibilities include helping to meet business objectives and KPIs, ensuring compliance with health, welfare, and environmental standards, and assisting in the supervision and development of farm staff. They are expected to maintain accurate records, analyse data to inform improvements, and contribute to financial monitoring. Apprentices also engage with farm assurance schemes, carbon audits, and regulatory requirements, while applying knowledge of current and emerging technologies such as precision farming.
