Teaching all English and maths programmes is delivered by subject specialists, with sessions tailored to developing and applying knowledge and skills that will, in turn, lead to the best chance of success. Sessions are delivered through class, individual and group work. The English and maths programmes use the college’s excellent ICT and VLE facilities to promote independent learning and extension activities outside the college.

Continuous formative assessment throughout the course will lead to summative externally written examination papers in May or June for A-Level and GCSE and throughout the year for Functional Skills.

It is never too late to improve your English and maths skills!

Meet your tutors

Ellie Fielding-Redpath

Before coming to Kendal College as an English Lecturer, I lectured at Lancaster University across the arts and social sciences. I completed my Doctorate of English Literature in 2023, and continue to publish research focusing on fiction, power, inequalities, and resistance. Kendal College is a fantastic environment for students from diverse backgrounds to find support and encouragement in a safe and inclusive learning environment. In English, we explore fiction and non-fiction, engage in debate and group tasks, and help students build confidence in their language skills.

With over 30 years of experience teaching Maths to students ages 11 through 90, I still love the subject! Having moved from South Africa in 2022, I have taught Maths in secondary schools and now at Kendal College. Surrounded by like-minded professionals who know and love their subjects, Kendal College is a brilliant environment to teach (and learn) Maths!

Jennifer Pakenham-Walsh

After studying for my Maths degree at Leeds University, I went on to work in accountancy for a few years before going into secondary school teaching. I worked as a Maths teacher for 13 years before joining college as a Maths lecturer in 2019. Whether you are in my class studying A-level or GCSE, I aim to build your confidence in Maths in a calm and friendly environment. I love that college allows everyone to explore and learn about themselves in a non-judgmental environment.
