Course Overview
The GCSE maths course runs over 32 weeks from September to June. Lessons take place at the Milnthorpe Road Campus one evening per week.
The skills learned in maths are essential for progression onto a wide range of careers and further study. Mathematical study enhances both problem solving and reasoning ability and transferrable numeracy skills which are vital across a wide range of learning and training programmes.
Learners will undertake a variety of activities to support their maths journey. Lessons will be structured to meet the diverse needs of learners, making use of whole class presentation and discussion, exercises, worksheets, textbooks and online technology. Revision classes will provide opportunities for further consolidation towards the end of the course.
Study at home on a weekly basis is essential for consolidation and practice, and homework, further reading and online resources will be provided to facilitate this.
The entire GCSE curriculum is delivered at foundation to provide the knowledge and skills to achieve a grade 4 or grade 5 GCSE, which is equivalent to a grade C in previous years.
Topics will include number work; algebra; shape, space & measurement; handling data; and ratio and proportion.
The course provides regular training in the use of mathematical instruments and calculator usage, and provides continuous opportunities for learners to develop their written technique for the assessment.
There will be half termly assessments throughout the course leading to one non-calculator and two calculator written examination papers in June.
Entry Requirements
The willingness and ability to learn are essential. Learners will complete an initial assessment to determine their mathematical skills but a grade D or grade 3 in maths at GCSE, or Functional Skills level 2 qualification would be an advantage. If you haven't got the entrance criteria, the College runs mathematics Functional Skills workshops, which you could join to develop your skills before moving onto the GCSE.
For the course you will need a Maths geometry set, Scientific Calculator and a GCSE Maths revision guide which we will discuss on week 1 of the course.
