Course Overview
This qualification is part of a full-time programme, studying 3 or 4 A-Level subjects and/or AAQs.
Studying A-Level History not only helps improve your understanding of historical events, but it also helps you achieve skills that are instrumental in many different career paths. These skills include examining, essay writing, researching, communication and problem-solving. You will also gain the capacity to prioritise information and learn how to make balanced arguments. This helps you to build an important skill set required for progression into university or your chosen career path.
This A-Level is awarded by AQA.
The AQA Advanced Level History comprises three components:
- The British Empire 1857-1957.
- The Cold War c. 1945-1991.
- Coursework on an historical issue of the student's own choice.
Students will study the first parts of Components 1 and 2 and sit the AS examination at the end of the first year. The NEA is completed in the second year.
The Advanced Level History course is taught by Kevin Mottram, a graduate of the University of York (Politics, BA Hons). Kevin has thirty years of teaching experience, including twelve years as a secondary school Head of History and five years teaching in an international school in Mongolia. In addition to History, he has also taught both Politics and Sociology to GCSE and Advance Level.
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above which must include Maths, and English Language and History at Grade 6.
After Your Course
Reading History can help students develop vital analytical skills which may lead to a career in education, law, or management to name but a few. The subject is valued in business as a tool for analysis; in the armed forces as a critical topic for strategists; in the police as a topic which teaches investigatory prowess; and amongst commodity traders for if you hope to predict the future you need to study the past!

Level 3-6 Courses
Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19 or over and studying eligible level 3, 4, 5 & 6 courses. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.
You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a Level 3 qualification if you do not already have a Level 3 qualification (this will depend on the course & your age on 31/08/24).

A-Levels
The fees displayed are for the one-year AS-Level course. If you would like to progress onto the full A-Level, please get in touch with us for the cost of the second year, as it will be different.
16-18 year olds
There are no course fees if you were aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another institution.
