Course Overview

This qualification is part of a full-time programme, studying 3 or 4 A-Level subjects and/or AAQs.

Chemistry A' Level focuses on developing and expanding the knowledge and practical skills gained at GCSE, to explain why things happen (e.g. why does a rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide mean that the coral reefs are being destroyed; why are certain compounds pretty colours and why can they change colour; why do CFCs destroy the ozone layer?).

This A-Level is awarded by AQA.

During the AS Chemistry course we study the following topics: Atomic structure, rates of reaction, oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions, chemical bonding, energetics, the chemistry of different groups on the Periodic table, the chemistry of different groups of organic (carbon-based) compounds and how they are analysed by chemists.

During A2 Chemistry the above topics are returned to and studied in more detail.

Throughout the course you will also be given the opportunity to practice, develop and perfect different practical skills., such as using a titration to accurately calculate the concentration of ethanoic acid in vinegar, deciding which fuel releases the most heat energy and investigating which factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above, including a Grade 6 in Chemistry and Maths.

After Your Course

This course will contribute to the requirements for an exciting range of opportunities for further study e.g. you could choose to take degree-level courses in Biomedical Science, Medicine, Toxicology, Ecology, Veterinary Medicine, Chemical Engineering, Psychology, Sport & Exercise Science, and many more.

This could lead to a wide variety of careers, e.g. Doctor, Environmental Scientist, Conservation Officer, Geneticist, Microbiologist, Research Scientist, Teacher, Science Journalist etc.

Gaining an A' Level in Chemistry opens up lots of different opportunities: Chemistry students develop many skills (such as numeracy, communication, creativity and data analysis) which are highly sought after by employers in lots of different professions, including human health, energy and the environment, finance and public relations.
