Course Overview

On this programme you will study various aspects of hairdressing or barbering which will include shampooing, conditioning, setting and blow-drying, cutting, colouring, cutting men's hair and beard artistry. If you are creative, like working with people and have lots of ambition, hairdressing or barbering could be your pathway to success. You will work alongside enthusiastic and experienced staff and use up-to-date facilities and equipment.

The department runs a variety of trips throughout the year, for example to Salon International in London and Birmingham Hair UK. Students also have the opportunity to compete in WorldSkills competitions.

This course usually takes place over three days. This course will develop your customer care, retailing and team working skills. You will learn how to handle money, multi-task and use your initiative. You will learn via practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and theory sessions.

You will be assessed using practical observation of your skills and oral questioning of your underpinning knowledge. Assessment will also be through the completion of written assignments, written tests and the production of a portfolio of evidence.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a 'C' grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

Entry Requirements

For Level 2 you will need four GCSEs Grade 3 or above. You will need to show through records of achievement or qualifications that you have the commitment and ability to make the most of this opportunity, and cope with the practical skills.

You will need to be able to work with others as part of a team and communicate with clients and colleagues.

Please note, this course has additional uniform/kit costs (in pounds sterling).
Uniform Male: 43.79
Female: 40.79
Kit: 138.50

After Your Course

The qualification and the experience you gain on the course will help you find employment in hair, barbers shops and beauty salons either locally, or further afield; for example, in large department stores, hotels, leisure centres or on board cruise ships.

You may also continue with your studies and progress on to the Level 3 Diploma or an apprenticeship. Successful hairdressers and barbers can take their pick from many top jobs - working in top salons in the UK or on magazines or photoshoots in the fashion media. With UK hairdressing regarded as the best in the world, there is plenty of opportunity to use your skills internationally.
