Course Overview
You will be taught all of the essential skills needed in modern day barbering, including skin fading, layering, scissor over comb, creating lines and patterns in the hair, shampooing, drying and styling hair.
Sessions will be taught through a mixture of practical workshops and theory lessons, where you will be assessed by practical observations and online multiple choice exams.
You will complete the year with a nationally recognised qualification, a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering.
The units taught throughout the year are:
- Health and Safety
- Client Consultation
- Shampoo and Condition
- Dry and Finish Men's Hair
- Cutting Men's Hair
- Creating basic outlines and detailing in the hair
- Cutting Facial Hair
- Customer Service
Entry Requirements
Interview required on application, and work placement is advised.
You will be required to purchase a salon uniform (approx. GBP50) and a kit (approx. GBP177) and text book for your personal use within classes. If the cost of these items would be a challenge and you live in a low income household/ or are in financial hardship, please ask Student Services about the financial support available.
After Your Course
Other courses of interest may be Level 2 NVQ in Hairdressing, or Level 3 Barbering. Previous students have become self-employed, and even opened their own barbershops!

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are charged per course for full-time students. There is the opportunity to pay in instalments if your course has a duration of 15 weeks or over. You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of this government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:
- You are aged 16 to 18 on 31st August of the relevant academic year and are not studying at another school or college
- Have a gross annual income of less than GBP25,000 (means-tested benefit or salary)
- Have a household income under GBP35,000 and are in financial hardship (bursary funding)
