Education is one of the most exciting and rewarding sectors and one that needs top quality staff at all levels and offers plenty of career choice, working with children of all ages and within various settings.

Course Overview

The Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and their Services offers an exciting pathway for developing a career with children and young people, including primary teaching and social work. The programme focuses on working with children from 0-18 years, in both education and social care settings. The programme was designed in response to changes in government policy which implied an integrated approach to delivering services to children and young people. It is awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, UCLan.

The full-time route takes two years to complete, studying 6 modules during each year and involves attending lectures over one full day and two days per week in a relevant setting. The course is based at the Main Site on Milnthorpe Road, Kendal.

There is an option to complete modules rather than the full qualification.

The Programme involves the study of 12 core modules, and the acquisition of skills at levels 4 and 5. These include:

Children's development - The impact of adverse childhood experiences on children's health and development.

Professional practice - Introduces students to the role of skills frameworks applicable to work within the children and young people's workforce.

Children's development -An introduction to classical and contemporary theories of development for children and young people.

Social Construct - The purpose of this module is to consider childhood as more than a phase within the life course. Students will be introduced to social constructions of the child and childhood.

Supporting children's transitions - Explore transitions, change and identity in children's lives.

Play, pedagogy, risk and resilience - this module develops a understanding of pedagogical approaches and models of resilience.

Professional Practice - Developing a theoretical understanding of your professional identity along with an awareness of the skills and competencies involved in working in the children and young peoples sector.

Work Based Learning - This module will provide you with an understanding of the skills required to critically appraise practice in your organisation contributing to service development in a specific area of practice.

Researching with Children and Young People - This module provides students with an insight into the research process, and provides them with the skills to develop confidence and competence as researchers.

Diversity, Inclusion and Rights of children and young people. -The aim of this module is to deepen your understanding of the experiences of children and young people in relation to the significant interplay between social inequalities and diversity in the children's sector.

Safeguarding children and young people - Develops knowledge and understanding of policy, legislation and guidance relevant to contemporary approaches to safeguarding children.

Global perspectives - An opportunity to examine different international perspectives in order to develop a deeper understanding of children's lives.

Entry Requirements

Students who have a relevant vocational qualification, and or A Levels (min 64 UCAS points) will be considered for access to the programme. In addition they will be asked to attend for an interview with a member of the course team. Before an offer of a place on the course is made, where deemed necessary an academic assessment will be required. Students with an relevant HE qualification may be eligible for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

As part of the entry criteria for this course you will need to have a check completed by the Disclosure and Barring service and this will need to be approved by your placement provider. This does not mean that if you have any previous convictions or warnings that you will not be able to join this programme, but an assessment will be completed as to your suitability to progress on to the programme. Additional Costs:
For students undertaking a dissertation as part of their course 2 UCLAN dissertation cover sheets will need to be purchased at 1.90 per sheet. Printing is 1p per sheet for black and white copying and 4p per sheet for colour.

After Your Course

Students may use this qualification to enhance their employment opportunities in the education and care sectors, such as a lead professional, or undertake a third year to achieve a BA (Hons) Degree in a range of subjects including Children, School and Families, here at Kendal College or Education and Professional studies at Preston. On completion of a BA (Hons) degree, students may choose to progress to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status or go onto a MA in Social Work.

This qualification is offered in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and is of benefit to those working in a range of settings. The Foundation Degree will enable practitioners, children's services employees, teaching assistants, play workers, and interested students to have access to a higher level qualification that is directly relevant to day-to-day employment and experience.

Degree-level student finance

Whether you qualify for student finance depends on specific criteria. The main student finance package for full-time students includes a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for living costs. Part-time students can access a tuition fee loan to pay for their courses. Generally, you will only get student finance if you’re doing your first degree-level qualification. It is possible to pay in full or via instalments.

The Access to Learning Fund is a non-repayable discretionary fund that gives students facing hardship extra financial support to access and remain in higher education. This can be accessed via the college. Please speak to Student Services for more information.
