Course Overview

A-Level Philosophy is an introduction to philosophical thinking and the subject matter of philosophy. It is designed to give you a thorough grounding in the fundamental concepts and methods of philosophy and introduce you to the fascinating study of thought itself.

This A-Level is awarded by AQA.

You will develop essential skills that you need for progression to higher education. You will learn to be clear and precise in your thinking and writing. You will engage with complex texts, analysing and evaluating the arguments of others and constructing and defending your own arguments.

Through the study of philosophy, you will be encouraged to develop characteristics such as open-mindedness, independent thinking and self-reflection.

A-Level Philosophy comprises of four topic areas taught over the two-year course: Theory of Knowledge and Moral Philosophy in the first year; and Philosophy of Religion and Philosophy of Mind in the second year. In Theory of Knowledge you will study the nature and scope of knowledge and justified belief. In Moral Philosophy, you will investigate the meaning of good, bad, right and wrong within three ethical approaches. In Philosophy of Religion, you will analyse different arguments for the existence of God. In the final topic of Philosophy of Mind, we ask and investigate the question 'what do we mean by mind?'.

The course is delivered by a philosophy specialist, having both a BA and MA in Philosophy.
