Course Overview

Why study this course?
- Use of outstanding local facilities
- Regular engagement and links with industry professionals
- Additional qualifications and opportunities on the course

If you have considered working in the Outdoor Education industry or have a passion for adventure, this course will arm you with the skills and knowledge to pursue your passion. Being based on the edge of the Lake District National Park, you will have access to a unique landscape in which to improve your skills. You will also have the option to complete a placement in an outdoor education centre, both for practical outdoor adventurous activities and to undertake a work-based project.

This course usually takes place over 3 days per week for two years. You complete the 90-credit Diploma in the first year and the Extended Diploma in the second year. The two-year course is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and is worth up to 168 UCAS points (Triple Distinction*) or 144 UCAS points (Triple Distinction).

You will benefit from small class sizes and will work with industry professionals in a variety of settings to support your career in the Sport and Leisure Industry. You will develop your skills and knowledge in a variety of land and water sports. You will also learn about the history of the outdoor industry, as well as looking at recent developments.

The courses involve a variety of theory and practical units. The course will include modules such as:

- Sports Coaching
- Expeditions

There is at least one day of practical activities each week, such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, climbing or mountain walking, depending on the time of year. The course involves a variety of visits to enhance student knowledge and the ability to work with employers. It will allow you to develop your organisational skills through planning sports events, motivational skills through delivering sessions and leadership skills through the various additional courses that are completed on the course e.g. First Aid, John Muir Award and Level 1 Paddles Sports Coach.

You will be assessed by video, discussion, presentation, delivery of a coaching session and practical assessment.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main course. Those students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 (or C) at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them. However, students will still have to achieve the stated Entry Requirements before they start the course.

Entry Requirements

You should have a minimum of five GCSEs Grade 4 or above, including English or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction. In addition you will be given an interview with a member of the Sport team to assess your suitability and potential for successful completion of the course.

NB: Enrolment on this course is dependent on meeting the Entry Requirements stated above.

After Your Course

You can progress to university to complete a variety of courses including adventure and extreme sports management or outdoor leadership. You could also progress to an apprenticeship or employment in the industry.
