Agnieszka studied Access to HE in Social Sciences at Kendal College and, after graduating from University with First class BSC (Hons) in Applied Psychology, she is now working as a Mental Health Recovery Worker.

I recommend Kendal College with whole my heart. Staff are supportive and understanding. If you are looking for a place, where you will be listened to, respected, challenged and guided, Kendal College is a perfect choice. As a mature single mother, whose native language is not English, I did not believe that I can follow my dreams and study Psychology. Kendal College helped me to achieve this goal, and without the support of my tutors, I would have never been brave enough to start my course at university.
Why did you choose to study Access to HE at Kendal College?
I have always been interested in social sciences. I decided to study Access to HE in Social Sciences at Kendal College, as my plan was to eventually study psychology at university. Thanks to this course, I was able to make my dream true. Also, it opened the door to work and support individuals who struggle with mental health. I really enjoyed working with my tutors and the very supportive staff. My tutors were amazing and, thanks to them, I started to believe in myself. It was clear that students’ wellbeing and aspirations come first. I felt well-guided and supported at every stage of my education.
What skills did you learn/develop during your time as a student?
I developed skills like critical thinking, report writing and clear communication. I learned how to write academic essays and reference them correctly. All these skills helped me during my university studies and now in my work. Part of my job role includes writing clear and concise case notes and reports. The skills that I learned at Kendal College are incredibly useful now.
What are you doing now?
In 2023, I graduated with First class BSC (Hons) in Applied Psychology from University of Cumbria. Additionally, I received the BPS award for the best student on the Psychology cohort in 2023. Currently, I am working for a charity as a mental health recovery worker. I look after people with severe mental health issue including schizophrenia, personality disorders and other mood disorders.
What advice would you give a potential student thinking of studying at Kendal College?
I want to encourage anyone who thinks about changing careers to come to college. I also advise to start volunteering as soon as possible as it gives an opportunity to gain some work experience. Also, time management is important. Planning assessments and start work on them as soon as possible. It helps to avoid unnecessary stress before deadlines. Finally, do not be afraid to talk to your tutors if you are struggling. They are incredibly supportive and happy to help.
