Apprenticeships in accountancy provide opportunities for employees to gain and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to excel in the workplace.

At Kendal College we offer apprenticeships in accounting at all levels and our learners come to us from a variety of backgrounds; from school leavers entering the profession to time-served employees looking to upskill and take the next step in their career.

Each of our courses is taught by former industry professionals, in modern facilities, using industry standard software, and throughout the apprenticeship learners will have a mixture of classroom based, one to one and workplace teaching.

Accounting (AAT), Level 2

Course Overview

This apprenticeship provides learners with an excellent practical basis for understanding the essential accounting processes necessary for an entry-level role in accountancy. After this apprenticeship, learners may wish to progress to the Level 3 Accounting apprenticeship and pursue a higher level of employment.

Entry Requirements

Ideally, learners should hold 4 GCSEs at grade (3-9), including English and Maths and be employed for thirty hours a week or more.

Topics Covered

Processing bookkeeping transactions, control accounts, journals and the banking system, computerised accounting, working effectively in accounting and finance, and basic costing.

Learners are assessed through computer-based exams and 12-weekly reviews between the Student, Assessor & Employer

12 months on programme learning and 3 months EPA

Accounting Assistant, Level 3

Course Overview

This apprenticeship supports learners to build competency in day-to-day duties as an Accounting Technician including activities such as data entry, month-end management accounts or year-end financial statements as well as regulatory financial requirements such as the completion of VAT returns or assisting in the preparation of tax computations. After this apprenticeship, learners are well placed to progress into careers paths such as Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant and complete the Level 4 Accounting apprenticeship.

Ideally, learners should hold 5 GCSE’s at grade (4-9) including English and Maths and be employed for thirty hours a week or more.

Topics Covered

Business awareness, IT systems & processes, ethical standards, financial accounting & reporting and management accounting. Analysis, communication, producing quality and accurate information, using systems & processes, problem-solving. Embracing change, adding value, ethics & integrity, personal accountability, productivity, team working and collaboration.

Learners will be assessed through controlled synoptic testing, a workplace portfolio and a competency interview

Professional Accounting & Taxation Technician, Level 4

Course Overview

This apprenticeship supports learners to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for complex management accounting tasks such as managing budgets and evaluating financial performance as well as optional specialist units including business tax, external auditing and credit control. After this course, learners will be well placed to further progress professionally and academically and may wish to pursue chartered accountant status.

Entry Requirements

Ideally, learners should hold 5 GCSE’s at grade (4-9) including English and Maths and be employed for thirty hours a week or more.

Technical knowledge (Accounting or Taxation), business awareness, ethical standards, regulation & compliance, systems & processes. Analysis, communication, leadership, planning & prioritisation, producing quality & accurate information, team working & collaboration, using systems & processes. Adaptability, adding value, ethics & integrity, pro-activity and professional scepticism.
