Course Overview

Step into Residential Childcare is an 8-week course which includes a work placement in partnership with Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness Council.

Whilst on program you will receive the following training:
- Understand the range of service provision and roles within health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
- Understand the principles and values in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
- Awareness of protection and safeguarding of children and young people in Residential Childcare
- Introduction to communication in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
- Introductory awareness of equality and inclusion in health, social care and children's and young people's settings
- Introductory awareness of health and safety in health, social care and children's and young people's settings
- Introductory awareness of person-centred support in health, social care and children's and young people's settings
- Introductory awareness of working with others in health, social care and children's and young people's settings

On this course you will receive the training required to help provide safe, stable and nurturing environments needed for children and young people to thrive.

In addition to this workshops will be delivered on:
- L1 Food Hygiene
- Emergency First Aid at Work

Applicants must be aged 22 or over. No previous qualifications required.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be aged 23 or over. No previous qualifications required.

After Your Course

On completion of the course, you will receive a guaranteed interview with Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness Council.

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses and per course for part-time courses.

There may be other costs associated with this course, e.g. kit, equipment, books, trips etc. Financial support may be available to support you with these. See the Student Money pages for more information.

Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2 Courses

You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:

  • Receive an eligible means-tested benefit, e.g. JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Have an annual salary of less than £25,000
  • Are aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another school/college
  • Do not already have a level 1, 2 or 3 qualification
  • Have a household income under £35,000 and are in financial hardship
