Course Overview
In the Level 2 Furniture Craft course at Kendal College you will be enrolled in a small class of up to 10 learners. This class is aimed towards those who have some recent, existing woodworking skills (primarily hand cut joints) or have completed the Level 1 Furniture Craft course.
Each week you will be have the opportunity to develop the required skills using both hand tools, power tools and machinery to create an item of furniture under the direction of your tutor.
This year the project will be created from Pine and will allow you the opportunity to develop your skills in design, technical drawing and woodworking processes. You will be given a choice between 2 briefs and allocated a set amount of timber to create your chosen item. Any additional materials brought from outside the college will need approval from the tutor.
The finished piece of furniture will be small, to focus on developing your skills. As an example only, the brief could include, a shoe rack, small set of shelves, a hat stand or even a breakfast tray.
Each learner will then work independently to research and refine their design to customise their piece of furniture which will be presented to, and approved by the tutor alongside sketches, models and cutting list.
You will be required to complete activity sheets and photograph your progress which will document your developing skills for submission alongside your finished item of furniture.
This qualification aims to:
- enable learners to further develop their skills in woodwork with hand tools, power tools and machinery.
- provide learners with the opportunity to expand their existing knowledge of woodworking processes, such as technical drawing and design, joints, machinery, profiles and timber theory.
- provide learners with a basis for progression into further independent study in woodwork related areas outside of the college environment. They may also consider applying for our full time courses for the following year.
The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to:
- develop a portfolio which records their design from concept to creation.
- use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely
- develop a continued understanding of health and safety considerations in the woodworking environment.
Entry Requirements
Some basic practical experience of handling tools and working with wood is desirable, but not essential.

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses and per course for part-time courses.
There may be other costs associated with this course, e.g. kit, equipment, books, trips etc. Financial support may be available to support you with these. See the Student Money pages for more information.

Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2 Courses
You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:
- Receive an eligible means-tested benefit, e.g. JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
- Have an annual salary of less than £25,000
- Are aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another school/college
- Do not already have a level 1, 2 or 3 qualification
- Have a household income under £35,000 and are in financial hardship
