Course Overview
This course runs part time, over 32 weeks (one academic year). You will follow the new specification GCSE English Language (9-1). It is an ideal choice for learners who wish to explore a range of language topics with an element of literature, develop a range of skills and expand their English Language knowledge base, all in one qualification. Language, with an element of literature, is studied concurrently and teaching is tailored to the needs of students as well as assessment success.
There will be continuous formative assessment throughout the course leading to two summative externally written examination papers in May-June. There is a skills-based approach to the study of English Language on this course; the assessment is also unitised around three areas:
- Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading & Writing. Assessment of this unit is by an externally set exam. (50% of the total GCSE qualification). The paper includes: analysis of language, analysis of structure, critically evaluate fictional texts and produce descriptive, non-fiction writing.
- Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints & Perspectives. Assessment of this unit is by an externally set exam. (50% of the total GCSE qualification) The paper includes: summarise information from more than one text, analysis of language (inc C19th texts), compare writers' views and perspectives and produce non-fiction writing on your own views.
- Non Exam Assessment: Spoken Language endorsement (speaking & listening skills). Assessment of this unit is carried out internally, under controlled conditions. (0% of the total GCSE qualification)
Mode of Delivery:
The classroom sessions have planned college learning zone visits, lively discussions and a variety of activities (involving whole class, individual and group work).
The course makes use of the College's excellent ICT and VLE facility whenever possible. In addition to the classroom sessions and self-directed study, basic ICT skills can be gained and developed throughout the year, enabling off-site learning and tutor contact.
Entry Requirements
A recent grade D or grade 3 at GCSE or a level 2 equivalent is essential although a diagnostic assessment, prior to enrolment, may determine course suitability.
If you haven't got a GCSE D or grade 3 in the subject, the College runs English Functional Skills workshops, that you could join to develop your skills before moving onto GCSE.

Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2 Courses
You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:
- Have an annual salary of less than £20,319.
- Receive an eligible means-tested benefit, e.g. JSA, ESA or Universal Credit.
- Are aged 16-18 on 31/08/23 and are not studying at another school/college.
- Are aged 19 or over on 31/08/23 and do not already have a Level 1, 2 or 3 qualification.
- Have a household income under £35,000 and are in financial hardship.
