Course Overview

Joining our HNC is an option for those not quite ready for university. Its possibly that you want to remain local to home and family, you may not quite have the confidence to leave home quite yet or simply you need to be in a nurturing environment which offers a clear pathway to gaining a degree. Our course is run by industry experts with direct links to local businesses. You will be taught at our new Westmoreland Campus and will have access to all that that offers.

Our lead on the programme, Amanda Eastwood has 17 years business experience in Retail, hospitality and has been teaching on Level 5 programmes for over 10 years, she is supported by David Stanning who not only brings a wealth of financial knowledge to the course but also has many years Operational management experience within the hospitality sector. We also have access to Marketing experts and a fellow.

You can complete one year and achieve a HNC level qualification, continue to year 2 and complete the L5 HND. This is a qualification which enables you to apply through UCAS to a variety of universities which offer the Top Up degree, these include University of Cumbria, Manchester Metropolitan to name a few. The HNC is a versatile qualification which offers an insight into major business activities, Marketing, Human Relationship management, Accountancy, Project management, The business environment, this allows you to choose your preferred route.

Our teaching methods include workshops, business visits, classroom activities and we work closely with various local businesses which give the learner fantastic opportunities to apply knowledge to practice.

Assessment is continual with each module having one assignment per semester, there are no exams.

Over the past few years our learners have worked with Bowness Bay Brewing and The Blind Choclatier creating a marketing plan for one and proposing a new product for the other with very exciting results. We also work closely with Tebay Services, Lakeland, Croppers for the basis of assignments. Our aim to develop real skills, teach knowledge and apply to real life scenarios giving the learner the optimum opportunity for future career progression.

Entry Requirements

Students who have recently been in education are likely to need:
- a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business
- a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English
- other related Level 3 qualifications
- an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
- relevant work experience
- an international equivalent to the above qualifications.

After Your Course

Progression for learners has included Improved UCAS points to access University of choice.

Access to Higher Degree apprenticeships, Improved opportunities into Junior supervisory and management roles. The full HND offers the learner to top up in a specialised pathway, e.g. Marketing, Events, or finance.

Degree-level student finance

Whether you qualify for student finance depends on specific criteria. The main student finance package for full-time students includes a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for living costs. Part-time students can access a tuition fee loan to pay for their courses. Generally, you will only get student finance if you’re doing your first degree-level qualification. This is true even if your previous course was self-funded. For further information, please see www.gov.uk/student-finance.

It is possible to pay in full or via instalments.

The Access to Learning Fund is a non-repayable discretionary fund that gives students facing hardship extra financial support to access and remain in higher education. This can be accessed via the college. Please speak to Student Services for more information.
