T-Level Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing Electronics Specialism.

The course will give you the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to progress into all areas of engineering, including mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation, and structural.

T-Level summary:
- Two-year courses
- Equivalent to 3 A-Levels
- Worth up to 168 UCAS points (Triple Distinction*).
- Created alongside employers
- Includes an extended industry placement (315 hours minimum)
- Supports progression into university and a career in the industry

Meaningful work placements
Our T-Level students gain direct occupational experience with local engineering firms, including Anord Mardix and James Cropper. Your placement takes place over a minimum of 45 days, spread across two blocks during the two years, giving you the opportunity to put your newly learned engineering skills into practice.

Although the college will try to secure a placement for you, you are free to seek out your own placement, allowing you to tailor your experience to any specialism of engineering you find interesting.

This course is designed to develop your knowledge, core skills and values in an engineering context, providing a great foundation to studying specialist areas of engineering at university.

The core content includes:
- Mechanical principles
- Electrical and electronic principles
- Engineering design including Computer Aided Design and Manufacture
- Mechatronics
- Essential science for engineering and manufacturing

The Workshop
Throughout your time at the college, you will have access to the engineering departments extensive workshop facilities. One day a week is dedicated to training you on correct workshop practices, and fundamental machining skills. One these skills have reached the required level; you will be working on live projects with the independence to make engineering design decisions. Examples of the machines you will operate include Lathes, both manual and CNC mills, welders, and a waterjet cutter, to name a few.

Besides the workshop, the engineering departments, maker space also has a range of 3D printers, including both filament and resin models, to allow you to quickly prototype designs and develop engineering solutions.

Assessment is via practical & academic based assignments, examinations, and a series of assessed tasks based on an employer set project.

Further opportunities
The department organises a variety of guest speakers throughout the year, including presentations from larger companies, such as BAE systems.

Awarding body
This qualification is awarded by City & Guilds. More information about the engineering T Level can be found here.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is designed for students aged 16-18.

5 GCSEs including 6 Maths, 5 English & Science, OR a level 2 transition Merit with 4 English, 4 Maths min from year previous or NVQ in a related field with a merit or distinction.

Learners needs to demonstrate commitment and drive for the course in interview. 90% attendance is expected. A reference from previous teacher/ employer would be expected.

After Your Course

This course enables progression to employment as aerospace engineering technicians, electrical engineering technicians, welders and on to a variety of university courses, for example:

- Mechanical Engineering (with Optional Year in Industry) BEng (Hons)
- Electronic Engineering BEng (Hons)
- Engineering with Foundation Year MEng Honours

The courses may also lead onto higher-level apprenticeship programmes within the different engineering sectors.

Other courses of interest:
- T-level Design and Development (Mechanical Specialism).

- Level 2 Engineering Transition to T-Level



The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are per year for full-time courses and per course for part-time courses.

Other costs may be associated with this course, e.g., kit, equipment, books, trips, etc. Financial support may be available to support you with these. See the Student Money pages for more information.

Courses fees

The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2024/25 academic year.

Level 3-6 Courses

Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19 or over and studying eligible level 3, 4, 5 & 6 courses. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.

You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a Level 3 qualification if you do not already have a Level 3 qualification (this will depend on the course & your age on 31/08/24).

The fees displayed are for the one-year AS-Level course. If you would like to progress onto the full A-Level, please get in touch with us for the cost of the second year, as it will be different.

16-18 year olds

There are no course fees if you were aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another institution.
