Why did you choose this course?
I’ve always been interested in Tech. I originally did do Performing Arts but when I auditioned I didn’t get onto the Performing Arts course. Tech Theatre was my second option and I really do enjoy it.
What made you choose Kendal College?
For me, I had a choice between Kendal College or Ulverston Victoria. I personally feel I don’t have the academic ability to do sixth form – making Kendal the perfect choice as it is more vocational.
Is college like you expected? If not, why?
It is but it isn’t. So I expected a bit of freedom, but I didn’t expect so much freedom. In secondary school you couldn’t just get up and go to the toilet, you actually had to raise your hand and ask and then they’d say “No”. So there’s a lot of freedom with that and I also enjoy being able to go off campus and I just enjoy everything about it.
What is it you enjoy the most about college life?
I would probably say the friends I have, I didn’t have so many in secondary school – not close ones. I’ve got some really good close ones now and I feel a lot happier here.
What opportunities have you had as a student at college?
So I have had the opportunity to be a Student Representative and an Ambassador. I’ve had the shows and I’ve done some outside film work as well.
What is the teaching style like on your course?
It’s very practical, we do a lot more hands-on sort of stuff instead of theory but we do some theory as well and it’s mainly in classrooms. Sometimes we’re downstairs in the Box working on our show or whatever project we’re on with next.
Can you describe a typical day at college?
No, I cannot because every day is very different. It’s either working on theory, working with lanterns or learning a new skill and it really does depend on what project we’re working on. Every day is a new adventure and we try to take every opportunity that we can
How would you describe your college experience so far?
In one word – Excellent. I can’t put it any other way, it’s just been great.
What are you hoping to do after college?
I’m hoping to go to university or drama school to study stage management or light and design – I’m not sure what I’m doing yet. I’m thinking about Stafford as my go to university too as well as looking at drama schools in London.
What facilities do you use regularly at college?
We have our set of studios and we use the production workshop quite a bit to do any kind of blog work or any kind of theory work mainly. We do some technical stuff in there too like workshops but when we’re doing shows, like today, we are in The Box. We are setting up the show, running it, doing a tech run – that’s about it really.
If you could give one piece of advice to people considering College, what would it be?
Do it because you know what, you only have one life. If you feel like you can take on sixth form go ahead with it but if you need to have a more reserved option and a freer option – go for college, honestly, you’ll regret it if you don’t.
