Why did you choose this course?
This course offers a range of different disciplines, for example, singing, dance and acting whereas if I stayed on at 6th Form it would have only covered acting. I wanted to do more to give myself a wider skill set.
Why did you choose Kendal College?
When I looked the website it spoke to me and what made it even better was that Kendal College wasn’t too far to travel to from home.
Is College like you had expected. If not, why?
It wasn’t like I expected. I thought it would be a lot like school. I’d heard that at College you have a lot more independence, but I didn’t realise how much! It’s the simple things such as having the option of eating lunch in the café or going into town.
What do you most enjoy about College life?
I love the independence that you get, although if you need support there is always a staff member to help and support you. I really like the flexibility of the course and I feel that it’s a lot more relaxed than school.
What opportunities have you had as a student at the College?
I knew that at College I wanted to build on my confidence, so I often support the front-of-house at shows to increase my skill set. I also completed work placement as part of my course which supported me to build on my confidence and transferable skills
Next year I am going to apply to be a Student Ambassador and maybe a Class Rep too!
What is the teaching style like on your course?
It’s really practical with theory lessons. Recently in a theory session, we researched a Theatre Practitioner which gave us a big insight into the world of theatre.
We have been working on various shows which are always very practical. When we have a show, we audition for the roles which is great as this provides us with experience for the future. In practical sessions, we work on a show or showcase and workshops are when we focus on a style or genre. We update our blogs after every practical session so we can we reflect on our performance.
Can you describe a typical day at College?
My favourite day is a Friday. I travel on the bus and arrive in Kendal for around 8.30am and head to the College café for breakfast with my friends. Our first lesson is a practical session which starts at 9.15am until 12pm. We have lunch for an hour which we either go into town as it’s so close to the College, eat in the café or on a nice sunny day we take our lunch and sit by the river. Lessons start again at 1pm which is when we work on our blogs. We normally finish on a Friday around 3pm. However, if we have a show the following week we may stay to rehearse.
How would you describe your College experience so far?
Successful, as every day I’m constantly learning about my course as well as myself.
What are you hoping to do after College?
My ambition is to go to University or Drama School. I’d like to specialise in acting or dance and drama.
What facilities do you use regularly at the College?
The Wildman Studios, this is a performance space lined with a dance floor. We use this space for practical workshops. The Box is our performance venue which is used for practical sessions and shows. I often work in the Library as this is a nice space to work in when updating my blog and use the Café for lunch/breakfast.
If you could give one piece of advice to people considering College, what would it be?
It’s a big jump from school, but very worth it!
