NAME:

Kailey Holmes

POSITION / CURRENT ROLE:

Trainee Clinical Coder

APPRENTICESHIP STUDIED / STUDYING:

Level 3 Business Administration

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS APPRENTICESHIP?

I chose this apprenticeship because Business Studies and IT were my favourite subjects during my time at school so having them together in a job sounded fantastic to me! I am also a hands on learner so an apprenticeship suited me well.

HOW DO YOU SEE THIS APPRENTICESHIP IMPACTING ON YOUR FUTURE CAREER?

Although the job I am doing now is not what I intended to do when I began my business administration apprenticeship, I wouldn’t be where I am now without completing it.

As part of my apprenticeship I was able to shadow other roles within the Trust, one of them was the Clinical Coding team. As I love to be constantly learning I knew this job would be perfect for me. Alongside my apprenticeship in 2018 I completed a Level 2 Medical Terminology course which gave me an advantage when applying for the Trainee Clinical Coder job when it came up. I have since been in this job for 10 months and also completed my Level 3 Medical Terminology course.

WHAT DO / DID YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR APPRENTICESHIP?

Undertaking a business apprenticeship at UHMB gave the opportunities and experience to flourish not only as a person but also as an employee. I met people from a range of different backgrounds and who all shared the same desire to create a friendly environment for staff and patients. Although I gained professional qualifications, I look back over my time at UHMB I have become a happier, healthier and more confident young person. I cannot wait to continue working for the Trust.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AN APPRENTICESHIP TO OTHERS?

I would 100% recommend going down the apprenticeship route! You not only get to earn while you learn but you also get the hands on experience which other people would not have while sat in a classroom studying for the same role as yourself. As I have proved you don’t always have to stick to the specialty your chosen apprenticeship was in. There are other routes you can go down and possibly even go down these as a full time job within the company you completed your apprenticeship in.
