Courtney Winder 2025

College is where you first experience true responsibility, and it’s a place that allows you to meet diverse people, gain new perspectives, and learn invaluable life lessons. The personal and academic growth I achieved during my time at Kendal College has been instrumental in shaping the success I enjoy today, and I’m grateful for that foundation.

What have you been up to, since completing your studies with us?

I’m honoured to share a few reflections as an alumnus of Kendal College. After completing my studies in Forensic Science and Psychology, I went on to study Forensic Psychology at Leeds Trinity University. I completed multiple modules, but my favourites were the theories of forensic psychology and psychology of social issues, as I found these the most interesting and enjoyable. Following my graduation, I spent two and a half years as a Mental Health Recovery Support Worker, and I now operate as an Opiate Recovery Coordinator for Inspire in Lancaster.

How did your time at Kendal College support your future?

My college journey at Kendal College laid the foundation for everything I’ve achieved in my career so far. The skills I gained during my time there have been incredibly important in my current role. Balancing a demanding academic schedule with a part-time job at college taught me time management, organizational skills, and the importance of prioritizing tasks – all of which I use daily as I manage complex cases and support clients with addiction recovery.

Through assignments and coursework, I learned how to analyse difficult situations, approach clients with empathy, and communicate effectively – skills that I rely on in my work every day. In my role as an Opiate Recovery Coordinator, I frequently work on developing individualized care plans, managing a caseload, and offering support to individuals facing significant challenges, and I feel the college's emphasis on building practical skills prepared me well for this. College is the closest experience to university in my opinion. You have so much more freedom than going to a sixth form, but you know that the support from the tutors is always there when you need it.

Without the support and belief from my tutors, I do not think I would have the confidence in myself like I do now.

What have been some of your proudest achievements and favourite memories?

Some of my proudest achievements include receiving the Mayor's Award at Kendal College, which highlighted my dedication and commitment. It’s something I’ll always cherish, as it reflected not only my academic success but also the personal growth I experienced during my time at the college.

Looking back, my best memories at Kendal College are the lifelong friendships I made, especially with my best friend, Tally Hassam, who I met on my first day. We've been inseparable ever since, and our bond remains strong. College was not just about academics; it was a place where I truly began to understand myself, and the friendships I forged helped me grow both personally and professionally.

What advice would you give potential students thinking of studying at Kendal College?

To current students: my advice is simple – don’t limit yourself to a single role or career path. As you move through your journey, your interests and strengths may shift. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different roles, as you may find your true calling in unexpected places. Embrace the opportunities that come your way and let them shape you.

And if you’re thinking about further study, I highly recommend it.

I look forward to seeing how the next generation of students from Kendal College continues to shape their futures and make an impact in the world.
