What You Will Learn
This course will support you in developing the technical knowledge and skills needed to progress your career. You will study and sit computer-based assessments for four mandatory units:
- Financial Accounting (Preparing Financial Statements): Learn advanced double-entry bookkeeping, account for depreciation, asset purchases, and disposals, and prepare an extended trial balance. You will also learn how to prepare final accounts for sole traders and partnerships, and work with incomplete records.
- Management Accounting Techniques: Understand the management accounting information used for accounting, cash management, and decision-making, including managing budgets and analysing variances.
- Tax Processes for Businesses: Study the VAT system and learn how to accurately complete and submit VAT returns in compliance with HMRC rules.
- Business Awareness: Explore ethics in accounting, business structures, and the economic environment, alongside the role of technology and data security in the profession.

- Independent Study: Students are expected to dedicate a considerable amount of independent study time outside of class.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements are AAT level 2 (or equivalent), unless you have significant work experience. Please contact college to speak to an accounting tutor if you are unsure of what level is appropriate for you.
All students need to be committed to the course and have a willingness to learn.
In addition to the course fees, students need to join the AAT as a student member. This costs GBP225 and is payable directly to AAT. This gives you access to AAT online resources and must be paid at the start of your course.
The course fee includes your tuition for the academic year and exam entry fees for your first sitting. The costs of any resits required must be paid by the student (GBP60/GBP70 depending on the unit). The course cost includes printed course notes. Students are encouraged to purchase text books (offered at a discounted rate) to support out of class study.
Students must complete the course in the academic year.
After Your Course
AAT qualifications are much sought after by employers, and the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting qualification is an excellent way to gain the knowledge to start a new flexible career. On completion of this course, you may progress into employment in the industry or work for yourself. Many students who complete AAT level 3 Diploma in Accounting progress onto AAT level 4 course. The qualification attracts UCAS points, and some students progress onto to study finance-related subjects at university.
On completion you may decide to apply for roles such as finance assistant, payroll clerk, sales ledger clerk, purchase ledger clerk or trainee accountant or accounts assistant.

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are charged per course for part-time students. You can pay in full or spread the cost by paying 25% on enrolment and setting up a direct debit mandate for 3 further equal payments. An Advanced loan is available to students enrolling on this course.You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of this government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:
- You are aged 16 to 18 on 31st August of the relevant academic year and are not studying at another school or college
- Have a gross annual income of less than GBP26,800 (means-tested benefit or salary)
