What You Will Learn (Course Units)
- Introduction to Bookkeeping: Master the manual and digital bookkeeping systems that underpin double-entry systems. Learn to enter documents into daybooks and perform reconciliations.
- Principles of Bookkeeping Controls: Explore control accounts, journals, trial balances, bank reconciliations, and VAT.
- Principles of Costing: Understand the difference between financial and management accounting. Cover unit costs, cost classifications, payroll, coding, cost behaviour, inventory valuation, and receive an introduction to spreadsheets (data entry, formatting, and basic formulas).
- The Business Environment (Synoptic): Learn the principles of contract law, the external business environment, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), ethics, sustainability, business entities, operations, and professional communication.
Entry Requirements
Any of the following:
AAT Level 1 Award in Accounting or equivalent
GCSE Maths and English (Grade 4 or above) or at least a good proficiency
Experience in an Accounting environment
After Your Course
Progression On successful completion of this course, you can progress to higher levels of the AAT Accounting Qualifications (Level 3 and then on to Level 4). You might be eligible for a fully funded Level 3 course through the Adult Skills Fund. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of your Level 3 study. Please ask a member of the college staff for more information.
The skills and knowledge you will gain throughout this qualification will qualify you for roles including Accounts Assistant, Finance Assistant, Credit Control Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk.

You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of this government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:
- You are aged 16 to18 on 31st August of the relevant academic year and are not studying at another school or college
- Have a gross annual income of less than GBP26,800 (earnings threshold)
- Have a household income under GBP35,000 and are in financial hardship (bursary funding)
