Our Theatre & Event Technology programmes enable students to enter the live events industry, which presents fantastic and numerous employment opportunities; the chance to travel the world, to be at the forefront of a creative Industry responsible for iconic events such as the opening of the London Olympic Games, Glastonbury and West End Shows and to support the many local organisations that need the specific skills set of a production specialist.

Course Overview

Theatre & Events Technology at Kendal College is well-known for the quality and excellence of its teaching, facilities and success of its students. Our students are at the heart of everything that we do and the opportunities that we offer. The qualification is through the leading Arts Provider, The University of The Arts, London (UAL) offering a tailor- made qualification for students wishing to immerse themselves in a professional and highly practical approach to studying Theatre & Events.

By completing this course, you will achieve a University of Arts London (UAL) Level 2 Diploma in Performing & Production Arts (Theatre & Event Technology).

Throughout the Level 2 course, you will learn and develop key skills that are widely used in the industry. This is an excellent introduction for those wanting to access the Level 3 Diploma in Theatre & Events Technology.

The course will provide you with an introduction into Technical Theatre and it will give you the grounding in key elements of the industry;

- Production and Stage Management: Learn the intricate skills required to organise performances and events.
- Working behind the scenes to run a theatrical production or event.
- Lighting for Dance, Plays and Musical Theatre performances.
- Intimate music gigs.
- Set Design: Create, design and build scenery and staging for a variety of productions.
- Design and build scenery and staging.
- Props: design, create and source props for a variety of productions.
- Explore skills in mixing a live band and create sound effects for a variety of performances.

During the course you are trained in a variety of exciting practical performance projects that vary through the course. Previous projects have included Halloween Scare events, Theatrical Showcases, lighting and set design projects, local festivals, scripted plays in our in-house theatre 'The Box'. You will be guided by industry professionals and immersed in the responsibilities of a Technician from day one, being treated as training professionals.

This is a very practical and hands-on course, which uses a wide range of industry standard equipment. This will prepare you with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful career in Theatre & Events. The course is led by industry experts and tailored to each individuals interests and skills, in an environment in which every project challenges and stretches your creative abilities.

Each year, the Theatre Arts students take part in an optional residential in London visiting shows and exhibitions and taking part in backstage theatre tours. We have been lucky enough to have backstage tours at 'Hamilton', 'Aladdin' and 'Sadler's Wells'. Previously we have watched 'Hadestown', 'Come from Away' and 'Everybody's Talking about Jamie', where we have met the professionals running the show. This experience is invaluable for our students, as it shows them the inner workings of how a professional production is run and gain invaluable career advice.

Your assessment is formed through individual projects and evidencing your creative process, this is documented on Microsoft Teams. Our world as Theatre & Events Technicians is non-stop, creative and inspiring. Students work closely together and in an environment which even in challenging moments, with practical deadlines and late night get outs of a theatre looming, never fails to bring a smile, a laugh, and a sense of real pride and achievement from a completed project.

You may also have work experience opportunities, where some students will engage with external clients and companies, developing your experience in the world of work.
There are no formal exams, unless you are resitting your GCSE Maths and/or English.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a 'C' or 4 grade (of higher) at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

Entry Requirements

- 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language & Maths.
- A reference from your previous school or college.
- A successful interview.

After Your Course

Students usually progress onto Level 3 Diploma in Theatre & Event Technology, Music, Art & Design or Film Production.

Many students who have successfully completed the course have gained work with in the industry, such as The Brewery Arts Centre, The Old Laundry in Bowness. Adlib (Sound, Light and Visual Solutions), Kendal Calling, The National Theatre, Disney Cruise Lines, Science Museum London and have worked on events including Kendal Mountain Festival and Lakes Comic Arts Festival.

The fee displayed is the course fee. Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses and per course for part-time courses.

There may be other costs associated with this course, e.g. kit, equipment, books, trips etc. Financial support may be available to support you with these. See the Student Money pages for more information.

Entry Level, Level 1 & Level 2 Courses

You may qualify for financial support to cover the cost of a government-funded qualification if any of the below apply to you:

  • Receive an eligible means-tested benefit, e.g. JSA, ESA or Universal Credit
  • Have an annual salary of less than £25,000
  • Are aged 16-18 on 31/08/24 and are not studying at another school/college
  • Do not already have a level 1, 2 or 3 qualification
  • Have a household income under £35,000 and are in financial hardship
