More Information

New for September 2021, we will be offering specialist land-based education in Cumbria!

Agriculture and other land-based work is a vital part of Cumbria’s economy and culture. We are excited to offer these new programmes, delivered by experienced staff for those wanting to develop the skills needed to make a career working in the sector.

These courses will be taught in the Penrith area.

Cumbria has a diverse land-based sector and our programmes will teach you modern techniques for productivity and business methods that will allow you to embrace the opportunities that will arise in the years to come. With our Cumbrian based offer and staff expertise, we will tailor our programmes to suit the needs of the local employers whilst ensuring that you have the knowledge and skills to succeed anywhere. With Cumbrian agriculture alone accounting for nearly 5% of all English farms over 508,000 hectares and full time 12,000 jobs there is plenty of work to do.

We will use our network of local employers to give you a diverse, relevant set of experiences. This won’t be tied to one place or type of location, or our own facilities so we can ensure you receive the training you need to be ready for what faces you after you leave college. This will include both taught practical sessions and work placements. You will undertake a work experience package that will allow you to put into practice and develop the skills you learn at college. This will be tailored to develop the skills and knowledge that you need for your future in agriculture.

We will offer full time, part-time and apprenticeships to support the sector and enable our students to progress through a range of programmes. The first applications will be taken to full-time programmes but details of other programmes will follow soon. For those students who have studied similar programmes elsewhere, we will support direct application to the second year of study.

If you have an identified learning need and feel you may require support at college, find out about our Learning Services and the support available at college.

Partnerships

We're delighted to announce that Robert Craig, who operates three dairy farming businesses across the north of England, has offered his support and facilities for our new land-based courses!

Managing around 2,000 acres, Robert operates a grass-based farming system. He has offered the college access to his 1,500-strong herd of dairy cattle for students to gain practical experience in a range of areas from vaccinations to stock management.

We are working with many partners to provide land-based education in Cumbria, but are interested in hearing from more. The college has committed to resourcing this provision but there are lots of experiences that would benefit students that we can only offer by working with others. If you can support our offer by offering work placement, access to land or anything else please get in touch. We may be able to help you with your training needs via courses or apprenticeships. Either way, please get in touch via this form.
