Are you a budding games designer?

Would you like to see your character and design ideas implemented into an original 2D computer game courtesy of our department?

Then the Computing & Games Team at Kendal College needs you!

Primary School Entries

Design a new character or characters, thinking about features such as the name, the sound effects which they might make when moving, and any special abilities they may have. Your designs could be for the main character of the game, the boss or even a number of mini-bosses?

There is only one rule, the character or character need to be of a certain art style – which is pixel art, so you need to make the character using just colourful (or non-colourful) squares. You can use software or even make with colourful squares on paper, or just use felt pens or pencils.

You could make different version of your characters showing them jump, run, crawl or using their special ability.

Entries will need to be scanned in using an app or a photo taken of them and then uploaded using the Entry Form below.

Secondary School Entries

Design an environment for a game, it could a side-scroller or platform-based game but must be 2D. You do not have to design characters, although if you would like to include some ideas you can.

Make sure with the design you give your game a name, a time setting (for example; medieval, futuristic, etc) and special features of the world, such as does gravity act in the way you would expect?

Design 3 levels for the game, each with its own features and characteristics, which you can annotate onto the design or write up in a separate design document. The environments could be either hand drawn or created digitally.

Entries will need to be scanned in using an app or a photo taken of them and then uploaded using the Entry Form below.

Winning Designs

Winning designs will be selected from the primary group (looking for the main character, mini bosses and boss characters), with secondary entries being selected for their unique level ideas. There will be a maximum of 3 winning entries for primary and a maximum of 3 winning entries for secondary.

All winners will be notified via email and your entries, pre-game implementation will be loaded to the Kendal College Computing and Games Facebook page for all to see.

The final game, in which the characters will appear, is due to be completed by July.

Good luck to all!
