Course Overview

Professional photographer and Kendal College photography tutor Dave Willis is a regular contributing photographer to BBC Countryfile magazine and he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to teaching lighting techniques on location, with these new off-camera flash workshops.

This is a great way to kick-start your location photography business or expand your creative skills and using flash on location is easy and rewarding, once you have some basic skills and a simple lighting kit. The workshop will guide you through how flash works, the kit you need and the techniques that are used.

The workshop introduces learners to lighting skills with a single flashgun on a light stand, building basic skills and understanding before adding more lights and accessories to discover just how creative you can be on location with off-camera flash. You will learn what flashguns to buy, what triggers to use and which lighting modifiers work best.

You will practice a range of go-to set-ups to create stunning location portraits and learn to think about colour and light with flash colour gels. You will also learn to light interiors and room sets and finally you will learn to light simple product shots on location - is if they were shot in the studio.

This workshop is a 'skills' course without formal qualifications or assessments and is suitable for anyone with a good level of existing technical and creative photography skill, who is looking to expand their learning. The course aims to provide an introduction to off-camera lighting skills to enable learners to continue their learning independently in their own practice.
Lighting stands, modifiers and accessories are provided but learners will have their own camera and at least one flashgun capable of operating off the camera.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualifications for enrolment but a good level of technical photography knowledge and skill is essential for learners to benefit from this workshop. It is assumed that learners will have their own cameras and at least one flashgun capable of operating off the camera.

After Your Course

This workshop is tutored by an experienced professional photographer and teacher, helping to support learners into independent progression, in their own work and practice. It is ideal for aspiring photographers and those working in creative businesses, who could benefit from learning to light on location. It would also be useful for existing photography/film/video students who would like to expand their knowledge of lighting.
