The CIEH Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work is a two unit, three-day course that will enable successful candidates to act as a first aider in their workplace.
Unit 1: Emergency First aid in the Workplace
Unit 2: Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace
The course is very practical and participative and there will be plenty of opportunity to practise the skills you learn.
As every workplace has different emergency scenarios, students will be given the opportunity to discuss their own requirements at the beginning of the course.
Students should dress comfortably and women should preferably wear trousers.
The training programme for Unit 1 covers the following topics:
- Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
- Assessing an incident
- Unconscious casualties
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- External bleeding
- Minor injuries
The training programme for Unit 2 covers the following topics:
- Secondary survey
- Injuries to bones, joints and muscles
- Suspected head and spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries
- Sudden poisoning
- Major illnesses
- Emergency First Aid
You will be continually assessed throughout the course. At the end of the course you will also undertake a practical and written examination. You must pass this to qualify for the CIEH First Aid at Work Certificate.
The certificate is valid for three years. You must attend a 12 hour First Aid at Work Re-qualification course after 3 years in order to renew your qualification in full.
There are no entry requirements.

This qualification will be useful in all career paths.
Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses, and per course for part-time ones. The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2019/20 academic year and is subject to change before the start of the course. Fees for 2020/21 will be updated in the Spring Term. There may also be additional costs associated with the course.
This course is not funded by the government and is full cost. As such, the course is the price stated for all students. If you are paying for your course, there may be the option to pay by instalments if the course fees are over £200 and the course duration is 15 weeks or more.
