Engineering

The Engineering department of Kendal College offers a dedicated workshop, boasting industry-standard centre lathes, CNC systems, and 3D printers, and a range of computer facilities with the latest 2D/3D CAD software. The nine members of staff who run the department have over 140 years of combined industry experience, working in sectors such as military engineering, motorsports, nuclear energy, hydroelectrics, manufacturing, and acoustics.

Course Overview

The course will be held at Mapdec Cycle Works on Westmorland Business Park in Kendal. Mapdec is an independent bicycle workshop and fitness studio. Their team are highly trained and have extensive technical knowledge on bike maintenance, making them ideally placed to guide you
through this course. Teaching will take place in their new custom-built classroom, providing the space and resources necessary for you to complete the program successfully.



The course modules are as listed:

1. Tyres and puncture repairs including tubeless systems

2. Rim brake assembly

3. Disc brake assembly

4. Mechanical gear systems

5. Hub bearings

6. Bottom Brackets, & Cranks

7. Headset assemblies

8. Wheel building

9. Frame alignment and prep

10. Systematic cycle checks and workplace safety

11. Fitting accessories



You will be assessed with a practical and knowledge test on each module and a final practical assessment to strip and rebuild a complete bicycle.
The course lasts 8 whole days with a break over the weekend. You will work on a range of different bikes throughout the course, and you can also work on your own bike at times.

After Your Course

This course would prepare the student for direct access to Cytech level 2 assessment if required and prepare the student for working in a professional bicycle workshop, and access to further industry training. You may also be interested in additional bicycle maintenance courses being run by Mapdec Cycle Works.

Fees

£1200.00

Course fees are per year. The current fee information is related to the 2019/20 academic year and is subject to change before the start of the course. Fees for 2020/21 will be updated in the Spring Term. There may also be additional costs associated with the course.

This course is not funded by the government and is full cost. As such, the course is the price stated for all students. If you are paying for your course, there may be the option to pay by instalments if the course fees are over £200 and the course duration is 15 weeks or more. Please speak to Student Services for more information on course fees.
