Course Overview

This course will introduce you to working with children, allowing you to gain basic knowledge and understanding of key areas such as physical and emotional needs, safety, reading and rhymes for children, creative play, healthy eating, and learning through practical workplace experience.

Work experience will be included for suitable candidates.

This course usually takes place over 3 days per week.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a 'C' grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

Over the course of the year, you will study a range of modules including:

- Introduction to the Caring Sector

- Keeping children safe

- Promoting healthy eating and care

- Creative and leisure activities

- Communication skills

You will develop your communication and employability skills in preparation to work in the care sector.

A variety of types of assessment will be used. These include blogs, creating leaflets, posters and presentations.

Role play will be a key form of assessment to support communication skills.

Entry Requirements

You need to demonstrate that you are working at Entry Level 3/GCSE Level 1 (or above) in Maths and English. An interview will be required, and initial assessments/transition visits may form part of the offer process.

If you have taken an alternative educational route and wish to discuss entry to this programme, please contact the college to discuss your individual circumstances.

After Your Course

Once you have achieved this course you may be able to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development or a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care. A tutor reference along with good attendance and punctuality will be required for progression.

Alternatively, you could progress into employment and gain an apprenticeship.
