The course content on the A-Level Geology includes: geohazards; surface and internal processes of the rock cycle; Earth structure and plate tectonics; rock forming processes; past life and past climates; natural resources and geological maps.
These are taught through a variety of theory sessions, practical activities and multimedia resources. Classes are complemented by compulsory fieldwork; undertaken within the Lake District National Park. This region provides world-class examples of volcanic rocks produced during an eruption larger than anything humans have ever witnessed. The field work locations will be used to investigate what the formations reveal about the history of the area, and what they tell us about environmental change.
This A-Level course allows students to develop key intellectual skills such as literacy, numeracy, critical evaluation and informed decision making. The course integrates a variety of data sources such as Geographical Information Services (GIS) and field data, therefore allowing students to develop a broad range of research skills. Furthermore, the course will allow students to develop their team working, problem solving and communication skills. In sum, these skills mean that students are empowered to make informed decisions both academically and in the wider world.
The course is assessed by three exams at the end of the A-Level course which test a student's ability to demonstrate and understand geological skills and techniques, as well as analysing ideas and geological data. Additionally, students are required to demonstrate competence with field skills and techniques (such as geological mapping); this is assessed through the duration of the course.
The course tutor has taught Geography and Geology at University, College and Secondary school. Additionally, he has research and industry experience, having worked in academia and with the oil and gas industry for several years.
5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above which must include Maths
GCSE English Language at Grade 6
This subject would suit independent students with a background in science and/or maths, as well as a curiosity for the natural world and environment. The course requires students to apply a broad range of academic skills (e.g. extended writing, statistics and field work).
After Your Course

Students with an A-Level in Geology continue into a diversity of careers including (but certainly not limited to) mining, civil and structural engineering, oil and gas exploration and exploitation, groundwater management and natural hazard management.
