Course Overview
The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Beauty Therapy is a qualification that has been specifically designed to introduce you to practical beauty therapy skills. This qualification has been designed for the 14-16 age groups, and will develop the knowledge skills to prepare learners for beginning to study as a beauty therapist. Learners will have their beauty therapy skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.
The purpose of this qualification is develop your skills in beauty therapy and will provide you with the foundation for further learning. It will also enable you to perform your own basic services and to assist others in the salon.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:
- Presenting a professional image in a salon
- Photographic make-up
- Basic manicure treatment
- Health and safety in the salon
- Salon reception duties
- Nail art application
- Skin care
- Basic make-up application
- Themed face painting
Entry Requirements
You need to demonstrate that you are working at Entry Level 3/GCSE Level 1 (or above) in Maths and English. An interview will be required, and initial assessments/transition visits may form part of the offer process.

After Your Course
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a beauty therapist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- Commercial salons
- Destination/day spas
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for study at level 2 and to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
- Beauty Therapy
- Holistic Therapies
- Sports Therapy
