It’s never too late! Our courses are specifically designed for adults aged 19 and over returning to study, either after a break or as part of a career change. They offer a proven and successful route on to university study.

Course Overview

The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business is excellent preparation for people who wish to change their career and prospects. You could progress on to university courses such as Business, Accounting, HR, Marketing and HR, to name just a few.

This course is specially designed for adult students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications to apply for university but who wish to study at degree level in the future.

Business activities go on in just about every employment sector you can think of. This includes financial services, manufacturing and retail, and areas you may not immediately think of, such as local and national government, water and energy suppliers and charities. People with business skills and knowledge are needed to make sure organisations run smoothly, efficiently and, for private companies, profitably. Excellent business skills can make the difference between success and failure.

This course is a full-time programme, comprising usually of two days a week in college and independent study at home.

Units may include:
- Business Mathematics - Statistics and Probability
- Introduction to Law
- Business Organisations and Structure
- Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility
- Introduction to Finance
- Event Management
- Mathematics in Society
- Sociological Perspectives
- The Human Resources Function
- Introduction to Marketing and Market Research
- The Global Economy
- Business Communication

Exploratory learning is the emphasis from we teach and through having access to the most up to date case studies will enable learners to receive the most up-to-date and relevant application of knowledge. Your course will be assessed via the submission of reports, essays, presentations and at times internal exams.

All learners will be offered trips that are supportive of achieving a more comprehensive perspective and knowledge base. This includes visits to the Houses of Parliament, National House Auctions, International Businesses in Budapest and Krakow & others.

An Advanced Learning Loan is available to cover the course fees, which will be written off if you complete a degree. Bursary funding is also available to support with the costs of coming to college, e.g. childcare & transport.

Entry Requirements

The Access course is designed for adults who want to progress to higher education, degree-level courses, but do not have the necessary qualifications.

You must be 19+ at the beginning of the course and be able to demonstrate that you are ready for study at this level.

You must hold English (GCSE Grade 4 or above, or equivalent). As part of the application process, you will be offered an interview with the course tutor. Adult returners are particularly welcomed onto this programme.

After Your Course

This course is best suited for students who would like to progress to University, with a particular emphasis on Business related subjects. These could include Economics, Accounting, Marketing, HR, Supply Chain, Logistics and others.



Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses, and per course for part-time ones. The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2019/20 academic year and is subject to change before the start of the course. Fees for 2020/21 will be updated in the Spring Term. There may also be additional costs associated with the course.

This course is funded by the government and may be free if you are:

  • Aged 16-18 on 31/08/19
  • Aged 19-23 on an Entry Level or Level 1 course with intent to progress to a Level 2 course
  • Aged 19-23 on your first full Level 2 or Level 3 course
  • Aged 19-23 on your first Level 4 course (if you haven’t already got a Level 3 qualification)
  • Aged 19+ on Functions Skills or GCSE English or Maths
  • Unemployed and in receipt of JSA/ESA(WRAG)/Universal Credit or another eligible state benefit on an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course
  • Member of a low income household & in financial hardship on an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course

Level 3-6 Courses for Adults

Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19+ and studying an eligible Level 3/4/5 and 6 Course. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.
