On this programme you will study various aspects of hairdressing, which will include cutting, perming, producing an image for a photo shoot, colour, colour correction, long hair styling.
The qualification and the experience you gain on the course will help you find employment in hair and beauty salons either locally, or further afield; for example, in large department stores, hotels, leisure centres or on board cruise ships. You may also continue with your studies and progress on to the Level 4 Diploma or an apprenticeship.
You will work alongside enthusiastic and experienced staff and use up-to-date facilities and equipment. The department runs a variety of trips throughout the year, for example to Salon International in London and Birmingham Hair UK. Students also have the opportunity to compete in WorldSkills competitions.
This course will develop your customer care, retailing and team working skills. You will learn how to handle money, multi-task and use your initiative.
This course usually takes place over three days.
You will further develop your practical hairdressing and learn new skills, including:
- Hair extensions
- Advanced perming and colouring
- Advanced cutting techniques
- Designing & creating images with the use of postiche
- Conventional & alternative setting & dressing techniques
- Indian head massage
You will learn via practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and theory sessions.
You will be assessed using practical observation of your skills and oral questioning of your underpinning knowledge. Assessment will also be through the completion of written assignments, written tests and the production of a portfolio of evidence.
All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main course. Those students who have not yet achieved a Grade 4 (or C) at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them. However, students will still have to achieve the stated Entry Requirements before they start the course.
Five GCSEs Grade 4 or above or an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or the equivalent.
You may be eligible for entry at this level with several years industrial experience or if you are a stylist seeking to develop a career in training and management.
NB: Enrolment on this course is dependent on meeting the Entry Requirements stated above.
After Your Course
The Level 3 will open employment opportunities for you in salon supervision, technical demonstration, and training. You may also be able to progress onto the Level 4 in Salon Management or Foundation Degree in Business Management (Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy).
Course fees are per year for full-time & degree-level courses, and per course for part-time ones. The current full-time & degree-level fee information is related to the 2019/20 academic year and is subject to change before the start of the course. Fees for 2020/21 will be updated in the Spring Term. There may also be additional costs associated with the course.
This course is funded by the government and may be free if you are:
- Aged 16-18 on 31/08/19
- Aged 19-23 on an Entry Level or Level 1 course with intent to progress to a Level 2 course
- Aged 19-23 on your first full Level 2 or Level 3 course
- Aged 19-23 on your first Level 4 course (if you haven’t already got a Level 3 qualification)
- Aged 19+ on Functions Skills or GCSE English or Maths
- Unemployed and in receipt of JSA/ESA(WRAG)/Universal Credit or another eligible state benefit on an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course
- Member of a low income household & in financial hardship on an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course
Level 3-6 Courses for Adults
Advanced Learning Loans are available for students aged 19+ and studying an eligible Level 3/4/5 and 6 Course. If you are on an Access course, the loan will be written off if you complete a degree.
