More Information

I started as a Mechanical Apprentice Technician and as I have now qualified, I have moved to the Operations Department. I work in shifts, with the Fuel Route Operations Team and this involves assembling and working with fuel and monitoring parts of the nuclear reactors on site. My Typical Day - I work two 12h Day shifts, two 12h Night shifts and 5 days off. My team comprises of 8 Operational Technicians, a Deputy Team Leader, a Team Leader and an Engineer. When I came to college, I had engineering in mind, but not the operations side. Whilst attending Kendal I was in a 4-year apprenticeship with EDF Energy, my third and fourth years were spent on-site and studying towards an HNC at Kendal. At the end of my apprenticeship, I was offered a job in Operations instead of Maintenance. It was a surprise and a difficult change, but it was worthwhile. I like the shift pattern as I can fit family commitments easily. I love working with a range of people from different backgrounds. I know I am fortunate to have a ‘job for life’ in the nuclear industry, this makes me very grateful for my apprenticeship, education and career.
