We are looking for an apprentice that is mad about bikes, enjoys practical tasks and problem solving, and has a keen eye for detail.

Hours of work:

30 hours per week.


£11,700 pa. This will be reviewed as skills develop.

What will the apprentice be doing?

An apprenticeship with us is a serious undertaking. There is a global shortage of skilled mechanics, and we want the very best

  • We will be training you from scratch over 18 months of intense learning and will build you into a professional bicycle mechanic.
  • You will be able to diagnose faults
  • You will be able to fix every component of a modern-day bicycle, including wheels, suspension and eBikes.
  • This is a serious time and cost commitment from us and our investment in you is wholeheartedly undertaken because your success is our success.

  • You will work towards and achieve a Level 2 City & Guilds award. This also makes up your probation time. After successful completion, you will be working on customers' bikes under supervision for a minimum of 3 days a week during the winter. By the following Spring, you will be full-time and focusing on rapidly developing your skills. Our first apprentice took just 15 months to pass their assessment and become a fully qualified and well-paid mechanic. We hope that you will be just as successful.

  • A successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following abilities through their application and interview:

  • An enthusiasm for cycling

  • A keen eye for detail

  • The ability to problem-solve

  • Have creative ideas

  • Communicate complex ideas

  • A drive to be better at a skill

  • £7.50 per hour, rising to £8.50 if your skills are on track. You will also receive private medical insurance after your first 6 months. There are a lot of opportunities at Mapdec Cycle Works, and we will support your skills and interests in other aspects of the business where we can. This includes photography, videography, graphic design, fitness coaching and teaching.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will achieve:

  • Level 2 Bicycle Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Level 2 City & Guilds award
  • Training will be in the workplace, with support from Kendal College.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • You will progress onto a full-time professional mechanic at the current industry rate.
  • We believe in lifelong learning and will encourage you to take additional training that will further your career and our business.
