The kitchen apprentice will support the kitchen assistants and cooks with all aspects of food preparation, cooking and kitchen cleaning as required. The apprentice will rotate around all 4 of our sites. All sites operate a 3 week set menu cycle.

The main part of the role will involve working alongside the kitchen assistant to prepare cold food such as sandwiches, salads, desserts and snacks, preparing vegetables for cooking and helping with some elements of cooking main meals.
The role will also involve helping with daily kitchen hygiene and kitchen cleaning tasks and completing cleaning records.
The apprentice will have access to in house training in areas such as person-centred care of elderly people, dysphagia and texture modified diets and diabetes and nutrition.
Once competent the person will be able to further support the cook in preparing and cooking main meals as well as assisting with the complex task of preparing texture modified diets for people with dysphagia.
Wage rate to rise when competent.
£30/month travel allowance.

None required. Functional skills available as part of the apprenticeship.
If the apprentice passes the End Point Assessment and has proven themselves to be reliable and competent then they will be given a permanent job within the company as a ‘kitchen assistant’. They can then work with us via in-house and external accredited training to progress to ‘cook’ level.
Things to consider
3 of our sites are in Barrow-in-Furness and one is in Aldingham near Ulverston. The person needs to be able to get to any of the 4 sites as required, as well as to Kendal college one day per week.
Once qualified the shift pattern for all our kitchen roles is 3 shifts on and then 3 shifts off, 8am – 6pm. When these shifts fall on a weekend or a bank holidays including Christmas, then they need to be worked.
