Bowness on Windermere Post office is a small family run business and has been operating under current management for 18 months.

The Post office is operated as a franchise and regulated as a local Post Office and has a high standard of compliance. We are dedicated to serving our local communities and many tourists with a quality service provision and a wide range of products and services.

To compliment the Post office, we offer a WHSmith franchise and full retail selection, in addition to gifts, ATM, photocopying, key cutting, confectionary and newspapers delivered to major local hotels.


Post Office Assistant Duties:

As a Post Office Counter Clerk, you will perform a wide range of counter and customer service duties.

You process traditional post office services such as:

  • Selling stamps
  • Weighing, measuring and mailing letters and parcels
  • Sending mail abroad
  • Sending urgent or valuable mail

Post office clerks also deal with a range of services including:

  • Bill payments
  • Car tax renewals
  • Foreign currency
  • Travel insurance
  • Pensions and benefits
  • Lottery sales and payments
  • Banking services

You use a Horizon computer system to deal with accounts and sales, keep records of all transactions, and provide receipts. You also promote financial services, such as savings and investments, to customers.

Some counter clerks do general administrative work behind the scenes, for example, keeping accounts, maintaining staff records or looking after stock, such as stamps and stationery. You might also display promotional materials such as leaflets and posters.

Post Office Counter Clerks will be required to wear a uniform.

Retail/Other Assistant Duties:

As a Sales Assistant, you might operate cash tills, and take payments from customers for goods purchased. This might involve dealing with cash and credit/debit cards, and sometimes customer loyalty or discount cards and vouchers.

Goods might have to be weighed and packed, and sometimes gift-wrapped.

You might also maintain displays of goods and check that items are correctly priced. You can also advise customers on purchases or persuade them to buy.

A customer may sometimes ask queries or file a complaint.

You can also demonstrate how goods work or direct customers to the location of a product. You might answer telephone calls from members of the public, suppliers or other businesses.

You might be responsible for stock control, receiving and checking deliveries, renewing stock from a storeroom or warehouse, and keeping financial and stock records. You might use hand-held scanners to record stock information and generate orders from barcodes on product labels.

Key cutting services. Be able to cut all types of keys to the customer’s request.

Operate and sell lottery tickets to over 16-year olds. Have a questioning attitude and be willing to challenge any age concerns.

  • Skilled and proficient in the use of IT systems and has the ability to learn new systems.
  • Confident and polite manner to deal with customers and suppliers. Bowness is a thriving tourist town and has much diversity.
  • Learn all different services and forms that customers may ask about
  • Manages priorities and time in order to successfully meet deadlines. Is organised and can self-manage.
  • Important to be able to work as part of a small team.
  • Attention to detail and analytical in nature and is good with maths/financials
  • Able to use numbers and handle cash accurately and competently and keep accurate records

  • Act with professionalism at all times and adheres to the company’s code of conduct.

Desired qualifications

  • GCSE Maths and English + 1 other GSCE at a grade C above (9 to 4)
  • Good IT literacy

Demonstrate any previous work experience could be an advantage.

Future prospects

  • The Post Office training is specific and can be used in any other Post Office business or in the future could have the potential to run own franchise

There could be opportunities in other locations due to expansion .

Things to consider

You must be willing to have a standard security clearance for Post Office compliance. This is an external provider; UK service vetting and you will be asked to complete an application form and send. Help will be given with the forms. The role will be offered subject to successful clearance. If this is not provided the role will be withdrawn.

Must be willing to work Saturday.
