Apprenticeships in Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy & Complementary Therapies are a respected way for new and current industry employees to gain and develop the practical skills and theoretical knowledge they need to work in the industry.

Learners at Kendal College are taught in industry specification salons using modern equipment and technology to become proficient in providing the latest services, treatments and cutting, grooming, and styling techniques.

Hair Professional, Level 2

Course Overview

Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men. Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship.

Training

Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp, cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks, colour and lighten and perming hair.

Assessment

Diploma for Hairdressing, Practical assessment and oral questioning.

Hairdressing, Level 3

Course Overview

Hairdressing is an exciting and creative career choices. There are many opportunities for progression, including stylist, senior stylist, colour technician, or even salon management. Hairdressing and Barbering could lead to a career on a cruise ship, in the media, and even teaching.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 Hair Professional.

Training

Creatively style and dress hair, creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques, creatively colour and lighten hair, provide client consultation services, hair colour correction services, contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of promotional activities.

Day release.

Assessment

Completion of level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing, a portfolio of evidence and assessment of practical skills.

Duration: 12 months

Barbering, Level 3

Course Overview

The Barbering Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship is ideal for individuals looking to build and develop their barbering skills. The apprenticeship consists of the Level 3 NVQ diploma in barbering, along with Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English (if required). You will learn and develop more advanced and creative skills, gain the benchmark qualification for the barbering industry and earn a wage whilst you learn.

Entry Requirements

NVQ Level 2 in Barbering.

Training

Advise and consult with clients, cut hair using basic barbering techniques, shampoo and condition hair and scalp, dry and finish men's hair, create basic patterns in hair and cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques (wet shaving if not already achieved in Barbering Standard).

Assessment

Level 3 Diploma in Barbering, portfolio of evidence and practical observations.

Beauty Therapy, Level 2

Course Overview

A Beauty Therapist works in one of the largest, trusted, professional and continually expanding industries within the Hair and Beauty Sector. The work environment can be varied in size, style and ambiance, from a cruise ship, through to small bespoke salons or luxury high end beauty salons and spas. A Beauty Therapist works independently or as part of a team supported by a manager when completing treatments as a key part of a beauty business. They demonstrate a willingness to learn, have an enquiring and curious mind and are enthusiastic to learn about their chosen career. In addition, they exhibit a good work ethic applied to learning, drive and commitment to learn and maintain continual professional development. They deliver essential one-to-one Beauty Therapy treatments whilst maintaining the organisation’s image, financial viability and reputation. They complete all duties and treatments within the scope of the occupational role in accordance with legal, industry and organisational requirements within commercially viable times. They act with professionalism, without supervision and observe safe working practices to a high level of precision.

Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship.

Training

Selects, uses, and applies a range of beauty therapy techniques, products, tools and equipment to provide: waxing services (legs, underarms, face and bikini line), hand and nail treatments, foot treatments, facial skin care treatments, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, make-up application, basic massage treatments (back, neck and shoulder).

Level 2 Diploma for beauty professionals, knowledge test and an observation.

Duration: 15 months

Beauty Therapy, Level 3

Course Overview

This course offers you the opportunity to gain a comprehensive range of skills and experience required within the growing Beauty Therapy industry at an advanced level. This will provide you with all the necessary skills to gain employment within this exciting industry. A career in Beauty therapy offers a diverse range of experiences including hotel and spa work, salon work or working as beauty therapist on a cruise ship. Successful students can expect to earn in the region of £14,000 - £27,000 per year.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 Beauty Therapy.

Training

Providing body electrical treatments, providing facial electrical treatments, providing body massage treatments, providing electrical epilation treatments, monitoring procedures to safely control work operations, contributing to the planning and implementation of promotional activities, providing single eyelash extension treatments and carrying out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils.

Assessment

Portfolio of evidence, Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy and practical observations.
