Motor Vehicle Maintenance

On our courses, students will experience a mix of practical and theory including working in our industry standard Motor Vehicle Workshop. They will grow in confidence, having the opportunity to work on a range of vehicles and projects such as renovating classic cars like our resident Lotus Éclat and VW powered trike. Every day will be different and students will learn all about the fundamentals of vehicle technology and engineering. Our courses have been designed to meet industry needs so we ensure that each and every student develops the relevant skills to walk into a career in the motor vehicle industry or progress to the next level of study. Our strong links with local employers will result in work placements at garages and workshops and students can also expect to take part in teambuilding events such as go karting to add to their College experience.

“I started attending Kendal College when I was 14 as part of the school links programme. I came here 1 day per week for 2 years and gained a Level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification. I really enjoyed it and decided to progress to the full time level 2 course when I l left school. My school links course enabled me to get to know my tutor and find my round the college and the motor vehicle workshop before I started my full time course. I have learnt so much because I can concentrate on one subject (cars and how to maintain and repair them) that I am interested in, rather than studying several subjects at the same time like I did at school. Alongside my course of study, which is fun I have been on a trip to the AutoSport Show in Birmingham and the whole group went go karting at Christmas. The facilities are brilliant and all the staff are really friendly. It is good to study with a group of people who are all interested in the same thing, you learn such a lot. I have got an apprenticeship at a local garage and will start as soon as I leave college.”

Why Study at Kendal College

Kendal College is well respected for working closely with local employers in the motor vehicle industry to produce high quality individuals to meet their current and future manufacturing needs. Our learning experience is well-rounded with industry-standard facilities and equipment and tutor support is second to none. In fact, all of our tutors have been employed in the industry so have immensely valuable first-hand knowledge and experience to pass on to our students.

What Can You Do After the Course?

There are lots of exciting opportunities available for motor vehicle enthusiasts. Some of our past students have progressed onto a wide range of varied career paths including building Harley Davidson motor vehicles in Canada or even running their own workshops. Although the UK’s motor industry is currently the most productive in Europe, there are future concerns of a skills shortage due to the lack of emerging engineers and technicians in the manufacturing sector. This therefore opens up a number of opportunities for students completing these courses. Many of our students tend to progress to apprenticeships to continue their learning whilst earning a wage and there is also the possibility of Higher Level study such as undertaking a Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Diagnostic Techniques or HNC in Automotive Diagnostics and Management Principles.
