Animal Care

Working with animals can be a very rewarding occupation, with no two days the same. At Kendal College we have a wildlife rehabilitation and rescue centre, along with domestic animals to give you a full understanding of how to care for animals. Animal Care and management is a growing, billion-pound industry supporting 13,000 businesses and 78,000 employees nationally.

Students will learn about real life animal care, with rescue cases being integral from the start of the course. After learning the basics, students will be given more responsibilities and assist in the clinic. Tutors are fully qualified and experienced with two veterinary surgeons. Theory classes will be backed up by practical sessions – so don’t be surprised to be out in the countryside getting a bit muddy!

Animal Care @ Kendal College

The Animal Rescue Centre (affectionately known as ARC) at Kendal College is unique in that we’re the only College in the UK to run a rescue and rehabilitation centre within a teaching department. If you choose to study Animal Care at Kendal College, you will experience a practical learning environment that is second-to-none.

Working with animals can be an extremely rewarding profession and the Centre has full veterinary facilities to take referral work from the RSPCA and other veterinary practices for wildlife, exotics and rescue cats. There is a small cattery, aviaries and hedgehog houses and you will have the opportunity to work with modern and sophisticated industry-standard equipment, including a digital x-ray machine.

“I believed that this course would help me to achieve my dream career of working in the animal environment and becoming a RSPCA trainee inspector. I am very passionate about animals and had heard very positive things from friends and relatives who have studied at Kendal College in the past. When I saw the Animal Rescue Centre and all the facilities, I realised that I would really enjoy studying in the exciting environment. Kendal College exceeded my expectations. All the tutors are approachable and very knowledgeable and the facilities are great. I have gained hands-on experience with animals and real-life cases, which I wouldn’t normally get the chance to experience at other colleges I looked in to studying at. The teaching style is very good and I feel like there is help whenever I need it.”

Why Study at Kendal College?

Kendal College started offering Animal Care and Animal Management courses in 2014. This coincided with the opening of a new Animal Rescue Centre, based on our Main Site Campus, which was the first of its kind in the UK. These fantastic new facilities enable our students to gain valuable hands-on practical experience in the clinic – assisting our qualified veterinary staff and nurses to look after and rehabilitate the rescue animals we take in.

What Can You Do After the Course?

Many of our students progress to University and Higher Level study. Subjects include Zoology, Ecology, Veterinary Nursing & Medicine and Bio-Medical or Animal Management courses. For those who want to go straight into employment and / or want an Apprenticeship, this course opens up a wide range of job opportunities from zoo work, veterinary nursing and reception roles, to animal related roles in the Police, retail and agriculture industries. Other options include laboratory or ecological work, going into dog grooming, rescue centres and kennels & cattery work are also possibilities.
